Hardtop respray

Having watched the last couple of black hardtops go for over £1k on ebay, I'm considering other colours which may go for less. It will be a while until I buy though, I have another expensive item to pay for soon....

Does anyone have a clue what it would cost to get a hardtop resprayed? I would have thought it's a relativly simple job for them.

I'd guess at £200 from a local paint shop.

Sadly it's the wrong time of year to buy as everyone is starting to think about getting one, or if having held onto it since last Winter will keep it. Best time is the Spring when they come off and people realise they have limited storage space.

I bought my used hardtop in Maldaves Blue for half the retail price. My dealer referred me to a local classic car body shop. By using their name I got my top painted for $189US and a first class job! The Black Sapphire Metallic was a perfect color match and with clear coat.

They didn't want to remove the spoiler which is attached with 3M tape. They warned me the finish underneath would not be a good. They were correct but it was still acceptable. Excellent experience!

Good luck! It is worth it!

They were mistaken. The spoiler is not attached with 3M tape. When I had my hard-top re-sprayed the liner was taken out (10 min job) and the spoiler was removed as well (5 min job).

We both were mistaken. They never took the liner off so all the saw was a spacer of some kind, thinking it was double side 3M tape. Good to know!

Herminator, you know Graeme is selling his for £675, might be worth it even allowing for a respray.

You're the second person to reccomend that hardtop. It could be a good idea but I'm trying not to make any big purchases for a while now. A hardtop will now have to wait until the new year I think.

Plus there's the fact that he's in Aberdeen... driving up to that area of Scotland takes far longer than it should and it's full of scameras. :fuelfire:

Yep tell me about the drive, my folks live about 60 miles from there, hate the drive up there...although there are some great roads too.

You'll get a better bargain in Spring hopefully once people start taking them off again, and you actually might pick one up from a dealer who has stock and needs to get rid of it because the new Z4 will have been announced.

Now thats a good idea

The drive north to Aberdeen is bad enough but the drive from Inverness to Aberdeen is just hell :headbang:

i live in kuwait and its like the opposite here. Hard top comes in the summer since temp hits over 50 degrees celcius. I just removed the top a few days ago since the weather just started getting cooler. its hitting like 36-38 degrees celcius now :)

Time to dig up an old thread...

GP20 any guide as to how to remove the liner and spoiler?
I have a Sterling Grey hardtop that needs changing to Saphire Black :D
I have potentialy two guys capable of spraying it up in their spare time if I leave it with them, but I'd like to make things easy for them if possible.

Hardtops seem to have dropped in price a lot on ebay recently....

This is the exact thread I have been looking for for a while.

Bought a silver hardtop for my 2.0 which i want to keep for my Imola Red Z4M now.

Problem is the corner is broken off as is common where people dont store them properly on a stand and indoors.

Can anyone please suggest a proper bodyshop to fibreglass-patch it and respray in the original Imola Red? Preferably somewhere in Kent, UK?

I think prices may have changed slightly in 10 years!

Many cars now come with elements from glass fibre, so would have thought it fairly simple. You just want to make sure it's done by a good company... I think you'll expect to pay double the £200 figure nower days.

Thanks Kis...

I would expect probably around that price. Will be nice to find cheaper but more concerned its done well.

Hopefully get it done before the cold but not a big deal as my MR is a garage queen in winter lol.

Did i read correctly a ‘15 E85 and SMG??

Someone had theirs done relatively recently, maybe worth asking who they used and how much they paid?
