Hardtop - a good investment?

My wife had a hard top for her MX5 and we suffered all these issues. The hardtop did make a big difference in the winter as it was her daily driver. The biggest pain was storing the thing in the garage during the summer. Really awkward to store without a stand and you are totally paranoid about anything else in the garage damaging it so you end up giving it it's own massive space.

Each to his own but not for me. Maybe think differently if it was my daily. Although if it was it wouldn't be a z4 in the first place :D
 
Apologies for resurrecting this but 12 months ago we were debating how and why hardtops were maintaining such high values. I wanted one and was wishfully proposing that as car values fell so would hardtop prices, but my cunning plan didn't work :headbang:

We have recently seen a £2k roadster and hardtops still being touted for close to £1k :o at what stage will hardtop values dip or will the price of a roadster fall below the price of a good hardtop?
 
I doubt they will ever come down to reasonable prices. Why should they?

They give the roadster a different and more aggressive look.

I got mine at a decent price so i'm happy to sit on it for another year and hopefully sell it on easily.

Hehe. Seems I lied my arse off! I now have a hardtop. Unfortunately one came up locally and in the right colour and I couldn't resist. Was in the Summer when I got it can't remember exactly what I paid for it but it was more than £500. Deffo didn't pay over £600 though as I recall and it included stand and a couple of covers.

The regrets are all still valid though! Put the hardtop on in the Summer to test it but the missus wouldn't help me lift it back off (frightened she'll drop it) so it's been on the bloody car ever since and I'm missing out on top down fun! :driving:

Soft top stays on just lowered
Fits with 4 locks. 2 at the front operated with a central turn mechanism and 1 inside each rear corner.

Fitting activates the heated rear window and deactivates the hood operation.

Very quick and simple job
 
Can't see the point of them. My Daily driver in Scotland only has it's roof up if it's not raining! More hood down days in winter as that's when we get cold, dry, sunny days.

Totally - this and similar threads since the early days.
The do like and the don't like them
The low prices in Spring and Summer followed by the comments of the price crash
The rising price in Autumn followed by the comments of prices firming

Paid £800 for mine 7 years ago and could sell it tomorrow for that or more :thumbsup:
 
It's the fitting kits that help z3 hardtops command high prices, they didn't come on the z3 as oe & bmw no longer make them-the roof is useless without it :headbang:
That's not an issue with the z4 as every car is prepped as standard to take the hardtop.
