Hard Top

Well I picked up a hard top yesterday and just quickly dropped it on at the sellers place. Forgive the photos in the late afternoon sun, but I think it makes the car look fantastic, especially from the rear, where it's very purposeful

After a spirited 100 mile drive through the hills today there is a lot of banging and crashing from it at the rear window area, that developed on uneven and poor roads. I plan to take it off tomorrow, machine polish it and check al the fitting points and locators, but any pointers of previous problems people have had?

No roadnoise at all. In fact it's earily quiet.

I just have this very heavy crashing noise from it on when going over bumps. Something is not sitting right

All I need is a supercharger and some clear headlights - right.....

Nice one. I think my problem is with a little gap between the windscreen and hardtop. I can see a little water trickle down if I wash the car.

Sounds like it needs to be raised a little at the back. Very easy to do. There is a how to guide on here.

I think you are right that the rear needs raising. That would be logical that it was OK when first fitted and after a day as the seals settle allow some impact on bumps.

I can take some high res photos of the screen area if you want to compare and PM them to you

Looks very nice but i am one of those who believes they are a waste of money to be honest, it's getting towards the end of October now, hard top time yeah ???, today was beautifull and i was out and about all day with the roof down, as there will be many nice days between now and next spring when i can enjoy fresh air motoring which is one of the main reasons i bought the car. The only reason i could justify a hard top would be if the cloth leaked flapped about, or was totally impractical through the winter, all of which does not apply to BMW cloth tops. So I form one would not waste my money on a hard top but I understand and respect others will have them..

hee hee..... I used to think the same as you, would of written the same as you a few years back. If the temp was above 4 degrees the roof was down. 2 1/2 years later I don't bother as much unless it's a scorcher. Car is more about performance now rather than enjoying the rays :) I bought the hard top with the intention of taking it off in spring, I don't think I will. Car looks awesome with it on, much more aggressive. Even folk at work have commented on how good the car looks now, people who aren't even into cars.

I have had the car a year this month Graeme and maybe in time my opinion will change but a grand at least is alot of dosh to fork out for one i think.. Though i do agree it looks good..

Yeah I guess it is. The one good thing is if you buy seocnd hand you'll never lose money on it :) In fact I'll make money got mine for £600, but need to do a little repair on it, small crack, you can hardly see it.

Firstly who says over £1k? No way did I pay anything like that much and new they are over £2200, so I negotiated a bargain for starters. :D :D

I understand your point of view and yes today once the fog lifted could have easily driven all day in the sun and enjoyed it, but that's not really the point. I now have 2 cars a soft top and hard top as and when I need them. I reckon I could remove the hard top in under 5 minutes should fancy take me.

Having now driven 300 miles in 2 days with it on, I can say it's totally transformed the car inside and outside. It's quiet, refined and still just as quick

All I need to do is fix the rattle.

The rattle may be the soft top not locking properly in the down position. This was sometimes a problem with the early cars like yours.

When you lower the soft top press down in the centre to make sure it is located securely.

I remember there was a mod posted on Z4um re: this.

Very nice pics.
I am perplexed though, why does your rear bumper have all the circles? I thought there was only one rear proximity sensor.

Looks great! PM me your email addy if you need the guide to do the DIY hardtop adjustment. It's really really easy.

Standard rear PDC as far as I'm aware

I need to know how to connect the rear heated windscreen up?? Mine isn't working. I have a connector come from the hardtop which seems to plug directly onto the pin which inserts into the car. Anyone got any pics?

OK so I've sorted the hardtop.

Firslly the helpful seller did not lock down the side he had worked on so it had sprung open - doh
The hood to body gap was incorrectly adjusted at 3mm Vs 5mm so thanks to GP20 for the instuctions
Various other plastic bits that should have been on were still in the bag so no wonder it all rattled.... :) :)

Mine is the same just 2 spade connectors fastened direct to the hood mount. I could not find anything else they are supposed to connect to and no reference to it in the manual so ammume they pick up current from there??

So after a clay, de-swirl machine polish and wax, with a lot of cleaning of the interior glass it looks like showroom new.
