Hard top roof bars

Is it possible (or indeed even sensible) to put roof bars on the hard top? I am still trying to figure out a way to carry my 20kg white water kayak around on the zed, so thought that those inflatable racks my actually work?

Keeping one large and expensive 4x4 for the task is making my wife ask questions that are becoming more difficult to answer now we have sold the caravan!
 
I don't know how you would attach roof bars to the hardtop. Firstly there are no gutters to speak of for attaching any clamps. In any case, anything clamped over the edge would foul the top of the door windows. You would probably have to drill it to attach anything....not ideal ! :cry:
The hardtop itself is only short so the bars wouldn't be very far apart if you did manage to attach some, and as it is made of fibreglass I'm sure it would then flex fore and aft if a 20kg kayak was strapped on. :o
I stand to be corrected but just don't think this is feasible without ruining a perfectly good and valuable hardtop. :(
 
You could always detach the hardtop, turn it upside down, place in the water and go kayaking in that....

Id have thought a removable tow bar and trailer would be a better option, if you really need to go down that route :cry: .
 
Read the spec, I don"t think any load capacity would be legal even if you did make fittings,,,,, the hardtop is not part of the bodywork/chassis so would not comply with anything, also means the hardtop fix points are just that,,,,,,hardtop fix points
 
I'd say that if you managed to bolt roof bars along or cross bars across the roof the resulting separation would be so narrow that a combination of the Kayak rocking back and forth and air resistance lifting it at speed would give a very high probability of ripping it clean out of the thin fibreglass to or pulling out the 2 front screen clamps. Even with bow and stern lines you'd rip the paint off the bonnet given its shape

Kayak embedded in following cars windscreen should make an interesting insurance claim

Still anything is possible
