Hard top prices

A hardtop should come with 2 side covers and front centre cover, plus the locking key (like an allen key)

Most have the fabric cover/bag
Shouldn't it also come with the stand (which folds down so that you can fit it in the boot of the Z4).

That's an optional extra - you can buy them separately for around £130

£130??!?!
Blimey, I'll be knocking one up myself if he doesnt have/include in the deal...
Looking at the BMW stand I wouldnt put a pre-retail cost price on that of £50 max. A bit of tubular steel, some bracketry, 4 castors, a few more bits n bobs. Manufactured in China for £5 per unit and based on worldwide volume demand; Design, testing, tooling, manufacturing, CE certification (?), packaging, distribution, storage. Easily a £100-110 mark-up for BMW.
Bastids.

Yeah, but that's not a genuine BMW item, made out of pure unobtainium by the elves in the Black Forest. How could you possibly think of entrusting your precious Z4 hard top to such an inferior third party product. :D

I've no idea if mine is a genuine BMW one made by elves ?

Is it possible to take off/ put on the roof by urself?
I'm living on my own over herein Holland and friends live too far away to ask to pop over to lend hand.
Neighbours generally treat me with suspicion and derision in equal measures for some reason - maybe i'm not posh enough for the area... I dunno. Dutchies quite keen on 'standards'.
I'm not married, no kids, and before you ask.....no i'm not. Lol. So no options there either.

Is that aerofoil above the back window bonded or bolted on. If bolted, could be a handy grab handle?
I read somewhere that theroof weight is 30kg? That correct? Not so heavy, just the lifting angles and reacjh would make it a bit tricky i imagine.....

That stand looks sturdy enough. Not foldable for boot tho i think?

This is a question I've pondered many times. I have lifted it with a mate and really don't fancy trying it myself. It's not just the dead-lift weight (around 25kg) - I could do that. Its the awkwardness of hanging out over your P&J, I think I'd either do my back in or damage the car
(the stand dismantles easily - 6 nuts and bolts IIRC - and fits in the boot no problem)

And i suppose the risk factor and eventual cost of repairing scratched paint, broken glass lend to avoiding lifting it on your own. Might still have a crack at it tho...

Already thinking about tinting the window. Only a light tint mind.
What se ye all? Yay or nay?

Done it a few times myself as no one around to help. I'm strong and tall enough but don't recommend it. Horrible angles and as pointed out consequences of a fail..
The spoiler is def NOT strong enough to lift

Built my own electric hoist in the garage in the end. £50 from Aldi and a few nylon straps and jobs a good'un

Or make some friends

heh, plenty of friends here but just not so local to me sadly.
Would be a case of having to wait for someone to come over for a visit I think, then surruptitiously dropping in, 'oh, while you're here, I don't suppose you could lend me a hand with something......'
Or cajole one of my suspicious neighbours into helping. There's an old boy who lives a few doors up, must be 90+. Always stops for a friendly chat. 'I had friends in England during the war you know...' ahh bless.
The only viable candidate apart from the fact I think his fingers would drop off if he tried to lift anything heavier than a cup of tea. lol

I may nick this idea to store and lower the hood on the MX5.

Some girls in bikinis then...? 8)

Crapsticks!
Overbid by €200 and sold to the highest bidder!
Should have been straight in there for the kill and picked up for €800 instead of fannying about tryin to get Betty back on the road.
Drrrr

If you had said it was on Ebay I would have advised to take a day off and drive to collect or if not possible use an eSnipe tool to bid at the close of the auction.

End price is about right at this time of year @£850 Would have gone for more in a few weeks

Hard luck :(
If its any consolation I was out bid on my first attempt to buy a Sapphire Black HT on eBay auction - was gutted (I bid £850 and it went for £950). Second time around was a 'best offer' auction with a buy it now price of £1,199 :o I didn't fanny about with that one and went in high with an offer of £950 and got it.

Nah, wasnt ebay. Was on a Dutch site called marktplaats.nl (which ebay owns) but its open bidding and unregulated. Hence, there's a load of dodgy stolen gear there.
Seller had agreed to €800 and I'd have gone down straight away to collect if it wasnt for the fact that I've been thrutching with Betty and this damn rough idle problem.
Could kick myself!
Oh well, it's only 'stuff'.

why is everyone so crazy about hard tops? don't get it personally. I got one with the car and sold it as soon as I could. I'm glad its gone. the only reason I kept it for a while was because I wanted to get the roof motor relocated.

I think I get it, if my car was used as year round 'transport' Id have one for the comfort and to save the fabric from winter crap. Why not? It seems you get 100% of your money back if it's kept well, but prices do continue to amaze me compared to other makes/models :idunno:

what ewazix said.
mainly practicality as i intend to use all year round.
Fabric roof preservation in winter as well as comfort during the winter months are the reason.
not absolutely necessary and definitely more of a 'nice to have' but I managed to negotiate a good price before i lost it to someone else which is what irks me a bit.
hey ho.
