I have recently bought a 2009 E89 and the multi function steering wheel has the button for remote phone use. It also has a button along side the radio. When searching the menu a “phone” option doesn’t appear to be there. A VIN check notes the high quality Bluetooth as an “available upgrade”. Dies this mean there is no phone connectivity and is the upgrade software or installation of kit please. Thanks

All Multifunction steering wheels come with the phone button, it's standed. But everything was an option from the factory, so presumably the original owner never opted for it, just like mine.
It can be retrofitted, depending on what else you have determines how difficult it would be. For instance, do you have iDrive (the flip up screen) or is it the standard radio?

Yeah that's how mine was when I first got it.
You can retrofit an original headunit that has Bluetooth (calls) built-in, with that you'd need a microphone (and housing) and it also has USB control in it so you can fit the combined USB/AUX socket under the armrest instead of the single AUX one that's currently there.
You may get away without any coding, but that's really down to other options on yours compared to the original donor car.
