Handling issues and tyre questions

Hello all,

This is my first post on the forum so go easy on me! I’m a relatively new 2007 z4 owner which I picked up a couple months ago and have had a blast.

My question however relates to the handling which just feels awful. The wheels seemingly “bite” into divets and bumps in the road throwing the steering off making for quite a dangerous feeling driving experience and am constantly having to fight to keep the car on the road or from going into on coming traffic (not ideal). I’m currently running the 225/45r17 run flats and am using the door recommended pressures.

My question is what could be causing this? I’ve heard the handling on these cars are fantastic but mine feels horrible. Car has been MOT’d and serviced only a month ago and other than handling drives great so I don’t think it’s mechanical. Any help would be great!

Runflats can make a huge difference to how the car tracks to road imperfections. A lot of people get rid of them as soon as possible, or try to find a runflat that more compliant.

I was wondering about that, I’ve heard they give a different driving experience but I didn’t think it’d be such a stark change due to the tyres, I shall investigate changing them thank you!

When the Z4 was launched (on runflats) its handling was never criticised. Its only as they get a bit older that issues start to arise. The clever thinkers are now pointing to rear trailing arm bushes as being the most likely issue. They are relatively hard to change and being on the rear most people don't understand how they can affect the handling so they never get changed.

Thank you for the info! Would that translate to direct wobbling/bad handling through the steering wheel? It feels like my car is tram lining through divets and humps in the road. It appears to be fine on flat roads.

How old are the tyres? What make & model are they? Are they all the same?

Our car tramlined terribly when we got it, but a simple swap of the tyres almost entirely resolved it. I say almost, as it still does it a bit sometimes, which I've never experienced in any other car as much.

Age wise on the tires, no idea. I only bought the car about 2 months ago, there’s plenty of tread on them and they look like they’ve got plenty of life left on the visual inspection. Front 2 are Bridgestone, back two are Laufenn. All 225/45r17 run flat.

Once you have ruled out runflats I would look to check/replace the drop links and lollipop bushes at the front, and check the rear trailing arm bushes at the rear

That combination when replaced should transform the drive
