Sorry if this has been discussed before, having recently purchased a e89 28i which I love the car seems to be trying to kill me at high speed over 70mph the rear of the car sways left to right and feels dangerous, the cars been fitted with new run flats by the previous owner so wondered if this could be the cause as they aren’t a great make.

What pressures have you got in the tyres & how many miles have they covered?

You need to get this checked professionally immediately, could be a multitude of things.
If it feels dangerous it probably is - is it from a dealer? Do you have a warranty? If so get it back to them

Tyres have loads of tread and pressure is correct. It wasn’t purchased via a dealer but I’ll take it into bmw locally for a check, had it MOT’ed, major service and overall check and no problems highlighted a couple of weeks ago and I did mentioned the problem but no obvious issues found,

might prove expensive. If you have a non staggered setup you could swap the wheels front to back and see if it makes any difference. but its a bit of a phaff... all depends on your willingness to spend!

Yep will definitely cost going to the main dealer but I just want it to be right so I can enjoy the car. Taking it to Le Mans in June so hopefully it’s enough time to resolve by then

i'd start with alignment, the likes of kwikfit would do you a free alignment check, which would also likely involve inspecting the suspension and bushings. it could be a collapsed bush is causing dynamic toe changes as you're driving along.

On the other hand, it might just be tramlining, run flats love to follow all manner of cambers, lorry ruts and other road imperfections.

That’s a good shout, I’ll get the alignment checked and go from there. Thanks. Read loads of posts on RF not being great. The Previous owner has put cheap ones on the rear, Churchill’s and Bridgestones on the front so not a great setup but wasn’t sure if this would cause the high speed swaying. Grip from a standing start is fine

That could easily cause the issue, get some matching tyres of a decent brand on there.

Yeah, think I’ll swap all for for non RF and see the difference along with the alignment might solve it hopefully 🙏

My first E89 had Bridgestone run flats and felt completely stable at high speeds. I.e. up to 120mph in Europe.

More likely the mismatch of tyres and cheaper brand that are causing it, or a deeper problem.

Interesting. ESP Cutts in all the time on corners when driving quicker as well but the weather is abit damp in the Uk so hard to tell if this is normal at the moment

Hello and welcome

So not just run flats, but sh!te ones at that. Yes they are trying to kill you!!!

As suggested get the free alignment check done to make sure no serious underlying issues. Then might be worth posting a rough location and if you can be @rsed see if any members local with a spare set of wheels that you can try to see if it solves your issue and allow you to decide what’s next. Either way that combo of tyres needs to come off to increase your chances greatly of exiting corners facing in the right direction

I'd start with a look over by a good indi to check for any badly worn suspension parts and replace where necessary, then an alignment to get everything running true follewed by replacing the tyres with a decent matched set all around

Thanks. Driving day to day normally u don’t notice anything’s wrong its just when you drive harder or fast on the motorway. Also have 19s on my 3 series bmw so might see if they fit as a quick comparison. 🧐

1 You need new tyres - i.e. the same good make all round - anyway.
2 The seller - Kwik Fit, ATS or whoever - will balance the wheels and give you 'free' or reduced-price wheel alignment.
3 Use the car 'normally' for a 100+ miles and then quickly.
4a If the problem's solved, be glad.
4b If not, be sad and go to a garage you trust.

Not wanting to argue with Brillomaster but do not take it to Kwik-cra....sorry fit...they'll scam you by finding things you don't need, or say you need and fix the issue without actually doing anything. A good indy with a good reputation will reap dividends. Obvs imho and admittedly my experiences with Kwik-monke.....fit....are from other people's experiences that brought issues to me and not from my own......because I wouldn't take a kids pedal bike to them to ask what colour it was....

The comments regarding tyres are sound advice, poor quality run flats of differing makes at each end is asking for issues.

Yes I'd definitely start with getting decent tyres fitted all round.

If that doesn't solve it I'd get the suspension checked for wear by a BMW Indy and then get an alignment done, but probably not by Kwikfit. Although like any chain there will be some good ones, it;s just finding them.

Luckily I have an ex-Sytner Indy nearby who does alignment on his race cars so I had my Z4 aligned there and it was transformed.
