Handbrake worn out

 Lancs.
Handbrake ratchet is worn away, quoted £250 plus VAT.
Initially I thought that sounded high, but after a forum search it looks like a new handbrake isn't cheap plus its a PITA to replace, so labour is high too.
So what do you reckon on this quote from a BMW / Mini specialist?

Would you consider tackling it yourself to save a few bob? There’s probably a tutorial on utube somewhere for some guidance? :?

no
Haven't the skills, the tools, the space or the time Rob

I would say.. Get it in writing and snatch their hand off... It cost me 600 quid at my local garage a month ago. The prop shaft and exhaust has to come off, and the manifold pipe will be rotted and resist even an angle grinder, Mine was cut out with a Oxy aceteline eventually. :o

Eck! I've already given the go ahead to order the part and booked it in

Make sure the price is firm
My gut feeling is that they have no idea what they are taking on and think it will come out the top... Remember it will be 100 quid an hour while they find out.. :o You could be up For a Lotta money before the 16 year old mechanic cottons on... :?

Agree 100% with Road Warriors comments  Have you asked Mike DLV for a price ?
I've found a BMW specialist right on my doorstep here in Fulwood; thought I'd give them a try.

Are you sure it's the ratchet and not the cables that are stretched? I had mine checked and the garage thought it was the ratchet, but when my dad and I checked it ourselves, it just needed new cables. Replaced the shoes at the same time and it ended up being a cheap fix, albeit a good few hours removing and refitting all the gubbins underneath the car.

Sounds like they mugged you off. The exhaust doesn't need removing completely, just dropped down slightly. Same goes for the propshaft.

£250 sounds about right if it’s done following TIS.

I’ve got the part but not booked it in yet. Looking at it, I reckon it would be worth trying to “re-teethe” a worn out ratchet it using a file from above.

Any work under £500 is general maintenance!

I have been lucky not having to spend very much on the Z4.

The 2006 1.2 Corsa Steptronic is another story though.

I did mine on my coupe last year, can confirm the exhaust and prop needs to be removed or at least moved out the way.

I did try and see if it could be done from above but not chance without modding the tunnel.

Going smoothly without issues it took a couple of hours. My exhaust had been done a few years ago.

Just collected car - new handbrake fitted, works like a dream. I realise now its never been right since I bought the car.
Cost came in under his quote too at £242 inc. VAT. Very pleased :)

If you maintain a warranty on the car it is covered- had mine done a year or two ago on my 04 under BMW warranty.
