Handbrake Question

Why does it work better second time?

First time I apply it sometimes it doesn't hold the car properly, then the second try always holds the car more securely.

:?

Heard of this before but never had the issue.

My instinct is that the self adjustment is not working correctly, so first pull gets it close, second ratchets it tight.

i find i really have to get my hand brake up to the top notch as everything else just wont hold it, even on level ground just doesn't seem to activate untill the last point, when i get around to painting my calipers i'll see if i can do an adjustment...

My handbrake is mostly for decorative use only

In the jeep world a handbrake is a devise which is designed to work on the day of an MOT. The day after it is retired until a rebuild 12 months later.

Same, I don't know if its an /M thing but when I asked the guys at TWG about it they said it could be adjusted a bit but unless its really annoying not to worry about it, so I don't!

It's scary when it decides to disengage with an almighty bang shooting the handle back down after you have put it on!
I always bang ontop of the handle now if I park on a hill just incase it fancies doing it again, it must be partly caught so any movement on the car releases it

Mine does this too - it will hold the car on the first try, but it pulls quite high up. On the second the pull is much shorter. I pulled it up and down a few times reasonably slowly with the button pressed the other day, and I did hear a bit of a clunk at a certain point, metal on metal. I'd consigned it to the 'just ignore it' section of my memory until you posted this :D

Always happy to add to the ///M paranoia :)

Am I the only one who has no idea what this is all about? Never double yanked or even knew it was necessary....

...guess he has a bad memory else he'd have revived the original :poke: :D

Couldn't it be that the first pull on the hand brake brings the pads up and the second closer? Does it depend on whether you have the footbrake on or not?

:driving:

Mine has had this issue from day one. I have had it at the dealer and they had adjusted the cable and pads during its manufacturer warranty. More recently on its last service my indie apparently adjusted it too.

But same issue... First pull on a hill it will roll. Release it and pull again will be shorter but will lock properly.

Maybe its to do with the hill assist releasing after a few secs so the handbreak works better :dunno:

I've just had to live with it.... And always leave it in gear!!

You could have something there aquazi, though I thought hill assist was the foot brakes staying on ? Or maybe it is some sort of German fail safe to stop the handbrake cable being stretched - so the cable is not sitting under tension when disengaged, which might stretch it, but as a result the first pull effectively re-tightens it.

I was all sweet and innocent in those days :)

Memory is an optional extra, not available on flimper spec
