Handbrake problems

I will soon be changing out my failing handbrake mechanism for a newer good working unit.
I intend to have a go at reshaping the Teeth on the failed unit and hopefully it works as new again.
I can change the Unit with out removing the Driveshaft and Exhaust….it is done from the top in the cabin.
It is necessary though to remove the centre plastic console first to allow access .
I will certainly post the results once done.”

I thought it was only removable from underneath?

I managed to reshape the teeth of mine in situ with a Dremel tho it was pretty tricky. A better and easier job was doing the one in the X5 as, with the seat out, I could get at the ratchet from the side rather than above.

I wonder if the e85 ratchet is more accessible with the console out?

Following this. I'd heard it was a pig from the top and only really accessible from underneath after removing lots. If its possible through the console without breaking or bending anything, then happy days.

BMW repair manual says from underneath after removing the prop shaft and to get the prop shaft off you have to remove the whole exhaust.

I used a 3mm chisel, from memory, to reshape 2 teeth in situ. Has worked perfectly for the past 2 odd years. The ratchet on the lever is sprung, so it doesn't matter how deep they are or if you are slightly out, the metal is easily cut with a big hammer and a sharp chisel.

Hi,
Where have you seen the option to go from inside of the cabin? Can not find anything on it

Also need to address mine. I was hoping to be able to reprofile the worn out teeth on the quadrant. It looks a right pig of a job.
