Handbrake Failure

Hi All

Having recently had the rear discs and pads changed 10mile later ( all working fine) there is a massive bang and handbrake completely fails, looking at the drawings if it was a cable snapped surely there would still be some braking? Does anyone have any ideas on a possible solution ?

Thanks

On the drawing I've seen it appears to be two cables that appear to connect directly to the handbrake ratchet but that could be wrong hence why if one had gone I'd expect there to be done resistance on the remaining cable but there's no resistance at all.

Maybe both cables have gone, hence no resistance at lever, you need to strip both disc/drums off and have a look at whats going on inside. Age of cars would be worthwhile getting a pair of cables to replace them anyway. Could also be the spring shoe retainers rusted through the backplates and the shoes have moved and unseated themselves. If that is the case either replace the back plates or use thin bolts nuts and washers through the back plates to hold the shoes in position.

When one cable goes the mechanism tends to just pivot to one side so neither of the wheels are braked.

Have you looked under the car to see if you can see anything. It could just be one of the pins that holds the cables to the arms, has come out.
