All i can say is, try the double yank and you'll know what were all on about!

nope tried it just now on the waitrose run... made no difference :idunno:

Thread revival...

Something must be broke, cos now it makes a huge difference...

Am I the only one who leaves mine in gear... No need to worry about the handbrake failing at all then :D

Double yank when parking, single yank when drifting (after holding the DTC button in for 10 seconds so the whole stability thing turns off  ).

Double pull every time.
The second application gives a very short and positive feel to the parking brake.
I assumed that this is due to an "automatic adjusting system" not staying set in the fully adjusted position.
I've not looked at the parking brake mechanism, so this is only an opinion based on the feel of the lever.

I see another poll coming on......

Double yank or single yank and leave in gear.

I never leave it in neutral, never have left any car of mine not in gear.

no, I always leave it in gear too...

but would like to handbrake to be firm none the less as it always has been on the first pull...

The Z4 has a ratchet style handbrake adjuster... When it wears, the double pull takes up the slack in the ratchet.

It does indeed, but the slack is the drum shoes wearing and in need of adjustment.

Not correct....

The shoes last a lifetime, they never really wear out.... And E85/86's where doing this fault when only a few years old..

The older BMW's had locknuts to adjust any cable slack, the Z has a ratchet mech to take up slack, but it often fails...

If you look at the TIS you'll see a comprehensive process to adjust not only the drums which has to be done whenever they wear (which given most E85's age will no doubt have done so to some extent), OR disks are replaced (That's done by removing one wheel bolts and it's a bloody fiddly job).

The Bowden cable is adjusted whenever more than 10 clicks of the ratchet are required. (Thats's done at the handrake lever end)
Here's a link for the 2.5 but all are the same:

Yes....

What the link actually shows you is the setting up of the ratchet mechanism after the shoes have been adjusted or discs replaced..

This will not stop the slipping action of the ratchet mech inside the lever..

Let's just agree to disagree and move on.

Why do you think the handbrake works better on the 2nd pull if it was just shoe adjustment ???

What difference would it make to the "pull" of the lever ?
