Handbrake crunching noise from lever?

Hi guys,

The handbrake on my 2003 2.5 has started making the occasional crunching sound whilst applying the handbrake.

It has only done this twice (but within about a week), and most of the time it operates perfectly, but when it happens, it makes quite a loud crunching sound (almost sounding like something slipping, or catching) which comes from the lever area, and as it crunches, the lever seems to jump up, or slip, as though it lost resistance for a second.

I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this problem, and if so, what was the cause?

Thanks in advanve for any info or advice

Russ

Mine does this too, most of the time it works fine, occasionally the lever goes with a bang like the cable has snapped.
I have not looked at the cause yet, I will be following this thread for info, if I do get round to taking mine apart ill let you know what I find.

Sounds like it could be the self adjustment mechanism isn't working right. I'm not sure exactly how it works, so I couldn't say exactly what's happening. All I really know is this mechanism is is at the end of the cable where it connects to the lever.
