Handbrake adjustment help

Hi,
My handbrake needs adjusting.
I've now had two attempts at this.
But I've failed miserably to depress the service spring under the handbrake lever. I can see it, I know what to do and what should happen but I just can't get the bloody thing to compress and tuck itself behind the catch that holds it in place.
So, an appeal. Is there a secret technique that I don't know?
Any advice very welcome.

Are you sure it’s not already compressed?

I had this when I bought my car - fought the thing for hours before realizing the last owner had forgotten to release the spring the last time they did pads.

Looks like I'm stuck with 100+ more attempts then!
Or .....
If the previous owner left the spring engaged, would the handbrake lever still have any effect? It does make sense though .... I just can't see that the spring can compress any further than it is.

I found I had to get a flat blade screwdriver blade on it and tap it with a hammer to get it to latch, when adjustment at the wheels done I poked it again with the screwdriver so it slipped off the latch and returned to normal position. I have three distinct clicks on my handbrake and a fourth if pulled up with both hands. Holds the car but I always leave it in gear and handbrake off on my level drive.
 
I couldn't fit the screw driver horizontially to push the spring back so ended up holding it vertically with a large flat head screwdriver. If your sucessfully a small black metal clip can be seen out the front of the spring holding it. I found it far harder releasing the spring trying to disingage this small metal clip than engaging it.
 
I think I used a tyre iron last time I did this (maybe together with a large screwdriver).
