Hand brake

Any one had a broken hand brake before? Been quoted silly money which is making the car a write off with the other couple problems coming up. Any one see owt wrong with this ratchet part? I dont think anything is wrong with the ratchet which is why im left to believe it is the cables but before i start ripping the exhaust and driveshaft off i want some advice to see if any one see anything obvious.

Right, cleaned up the topic.... if anyone would like to help out by all means reply, but there is no room on this forum for throwing insults around, so if you don't have anything useful to say, please move along.

How sure are you that a cable is broken or seized?
Take a look at Pelican Parts how to for adjusting handbrake here

If you need new cables then the rear drum/discs will have to come off to get at the cable that end. Bit tight to disconnect at the handle end inside the car, limited access from underneath, prop and exhaust may need to be dropped.

Thank you for a decent reply. I will give the adjusting a go before anything. What would happen if it does nothing. Would that confirm it is the cables. When it did go, i pulled the hand break up and it went straight to the sky and never worked again after that.

For sure…really doesn’t help newbies get a good impression / stay when they or their discussion point gets such abuse..

Hi OP. I have a similar issue. If I gently pull the handle up, making sure to press the knob in, it works fine. But if I pull a little too briskly it goes right to the top. Usually releasing and trying again works but occasionally it seems to set the adjustment catch and I have to use a screwdriver to release it again. My problem seems to be caused by the middle section of the ratchet teeth being worn down. Yours look quite worn too. You ‘may’ end up needing to replace the handle assembly.
 
If you remove the disc/drums then get a helper to apply the handbrake you should be able to see if the cables are moving at the shoes end.
The others do make a valid point about the ratchet teeth on the handle being worn down and becomming non effective. As stated a good used replacement is the way to go, this involves dropping the propshaft and exhaust under the car to get the unit out. I do know someone who removed theirs from inside the car but that invoves bending the surrounding bodywork to get it out.
 
Access and adjustment/replacement wise, its not the most amazing design by BMW, is it.

The problem with the replace the handbrake lever idea is that BMW don't have any stock and haven't had any for ages now. Good uses ones seem equally rare and I'm not aware of anyone doing repair kits. Maybe a gap in the market there as this seems a very common problem.
 
I always thought you'd adjust the handbrake from the splined screw tensioner sitting inside the handbrake drum, before thinking about cables or replacement levers. It could also be that the handbrake shoes need replacing or in my case just a sandpaper to take off the glaze on the pads and some light corrosion removal from the inside drum.

I am not going to speak for Chris, but on my part that is totally untrue.
I may be a lot of things but a bully has never been one of them.
If anyone actually understood what I wrote and why, I think it would be obvious.

Last word on the matter but I am NOT A BULLY. I resent that accusation. :x

Many people that used to be on the forum cite you and others for their decline in interest here.

The perpetual negative and snide comments piss many people off.

Why do you post on a topic that you have no knowledge, no interest with snide and dismissive views?

The lounge and on the light side is the part of the forum that caters for non Zed discussions..why not piss in that pool rather than on other peoples posts where you add no value and detract from the core subject matter?

I'd suggest that the 'holier-than-thou' sanctimonious and snipey commenting from people like you also add to a negative element on the forum. But you feel you have to chip in with your own 2 cents as usual.

Piss taking aside your car won’t pass the MOT if the handbrake does not work correctly.
I’m pretty sure I have one cable broken so have to investigate, replacements are cheap enough but I’m expecting a lot of work to fit.
