Hand brake slipping?

On two occassions when parking the car and pulling up the hand break the level swung all the way up without any resistance :o

It happened once each on two consequetive days last week, but not before or since. When it happened I lower the lever and tried again and it was fine.

Anyone know what that's about?? :?

If it consistently didn't work, I guess it would be obvious that the cable was broken or a connection was missing somewhere...

but, only doing that intermittently is pretty odd, i will agree...

Mine has done this a couple of times and afterwards the handbrake didn't seem to release properly. You would pull away and the brakes would squeal for the first few yards then free up. I supposedly had it fixed but it has done it again. When it happens it feels almost like the cable is slipping off somethingas you pull the handbrake lever up.

I've had this happen once. Almost as if the hand brake slipped off the ratchet underneath.
Put it back down and it was fine again.

It's a certainty that for this to happen then the cable is sticking in its outer core, or less likely that one or both of the caliper levers are sticking.

In essence you pull the handbrake up, the cable sticks, you release the handbrake lever and the cable only partly returns. Enough to prevent the brakes binding. Next time you apply the handbrake since the cable is already mostly pulled up and stuck the lever swings up with no resistance. You pull it a couple of time and all appears well as this causes it to free up

Easy - replace the cable and check the calipers. Nothing is broken per se.
