Hand Brake Problems

Hi Everyone
I have an 04 plate Z4 2.2 litre E85. I have pulled the handbrake up to its limit and the handbrake has as best as I can describe just gone loose and floppy with no resistance whatsoever. I have taken it to a mechanic friend of mine who has adjusted the back brakes, and the handbrake cables are intact where they meet the back brakes. Could this be a handbrake mechanism problem, or maybe something worse. I have tried to explain the problem as best I can. If the car requires an expensive repair I will have to carefully consider it due to the age of the car. Any help or advice on this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like broken cables to me you or your friend really need to take the disc/drums off and see if there is any movement on the cables when the lever is pulled up or down also check if the ratchet teeth at the lever end are intact, the wear out over time because people don't push the button in when pulling the lever up, the teeth are soft and wear because of this.

As said before, gain access to the handbrake itself and see if it is alright; it may have broken or fractured teeth. If that is the problem, the handbrake can be removed by bending the metal surround rather than dropping the propshaft if cost is a consideration.

If the lever ratchet is working which it sounds like it is then I think the most likely solution is that the brake drum backing plates have rusted away. Not that expensive to fix.
