Hi
Just fitted new disc on the rear and handbrake is now not very good
Can I adjust on the back wheels with the star wheel or do I need to push the service spring back in the hand brake lever
Seen people on u tube do it with out touching the hand brake
Thanks

I adjusted using the star wheels, IIRC they can be accessed though wheel stud holes, around the 1 and 11 o clock positions. Torch and flat head should suffice.

Just checked my old post on this, edited the actual position of the adjusters.

You will need to do both to set it up properly, particularly with new shoes. Getting the lever spring off/on can be tricky and there is a special tool which might be ideal, but a good long screwdriver suffices. The process can be seen here https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/BMW_Z4M/92-BRAKES-Parking_Brake_Adjusting/92-BRAKES-Parking_Brake_Adjusting.htm

An old thread I know, but just to understand what the lock mechanism is for by the handbrake.
Is it just to lock the cable so you can adjust both wheels separately?

Got new shoes for mine just genning up on how to adjust them.

Its to release any tension in the cable, you then adjust the shoes then reset the service lock. Its a poor design of handbrake really.

So the spring is to stop any slack or rattling!

Did my brake shoes yesterday, what a balls ache that was.
I had to take the handbrake gaiter off to see what I was doing, even then I couldn't get a screwdriver in directly. I had to go in from the top and slide the spring backwards.

And as for doing the shoes, you need lots of hands to hold everything in place when putting it back, not an easy task.

Anyway, handbrake feels good now at 3 clicks, so not all in vane.
