Halogen to Xenon Conversion

Hi,

I have recently purchased a 2007 Z4 3.0 Si Sport - the car is brilliant except for the halogen headlights which are just the opposite. Driving at night is no fun!

I have already upgraded the bulbs to +50% and slightly raised the beam but they are still c..p. I'm thinking of fitting this kit (http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/hid-conver ... p-457.html) but it says "If your car has canbus then you may need to use our HID error decoders in addition to this kit". Can anyone advise if a 2007 Z4 would have canbus and if so whether the kit I should buy is the "H7 + Bulb Error Cancellers" (i.e. are error cancellers the same as error decoders?).

Cheers

andmas, welcome to the forum.

I thought the same about the halogens - initially upgraded to +80% bulbs and raised the beam height but they were still not good enough. Your link's not working, but I fitted a HIDs-direct kit, including the "error cancellers" and they've been hassle free. That's on my 2004 Z4, but I don't believe they've changed anything wiring-related for 2007 halogens.

I got this kit: http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/hid-conversion-kits-50w/bmw-hid-kits/bmw-supervision-50w-hid-kits-p-279.html in 4300k colour. There's now a slimline kit other forum users have gone for I believe.

Thanks for the welcome ally.

I've read your Feb 2010 post and my reason for wanting the HID's is exactly the same as yours - to safely see where I am going!! I'm going to go for the HIDS Direct 50w slim 4300k version with bulb error cancellers and try and get the ballasts inside the headlight itself to avoid risk of condensation - link (if working) - http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/hid-conversion-kits-slim-50w/h1h3h7h1190059006-hid-kits/50w-slim-single-beam-hid-conversion-kits-p-457.html. :)

Gone 50 watt and 6000, concerned these aren't legal in fact no 50 watt is. Anyone had issues? Wouldn't 35 be better and legal?

Am I right to bottle it and stick with halogens lol

Hi,

I have purchased the HIDS Direct 50w slim kit (link - http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/hid-conver ... p-457.html. ) but there were no wiring connection instructions.

I think that the wiring connections should be as follows:

1. Blue wire in bulb 'loom' (with spade connection) to existing +ve to existing headlights.
2. Black wire in bulb 'loom' (with spade connection) to existing -ve to existing headlights.
3. Red wire in bulb 'loom' (with black connector) to red wire from black box that is connected to the ballast .
4. Black wire in bulb 'loom' (with black connector) to black wire from black box that is connected to the ballast.
5. Combined black & blue wires in bulb 'loom' (with black multi connector) to combined red & black wires (with black multi connector) from the 'Warning Canceller Capacitor'.
6. Thick black wire from ballast (with black multi connector) to combined red & black wires (with blue multi connector) from the 'Warning Canceller Capacitor'.

I can't see any other way of connecting items 3 to 6 as the plugs connect together but would be grateful for someone to advise if my assumptions are correct. I am unsure on items 1 and 2 whether it is the black wire or the blue wire that is the positive - again any advise would be appreciated.

Also the diagram on Mintstuffs post seems to show the ballast fixed to the side reflector section in the headlight casing in front of the high beam bulb - apart from being visible through the outer lens cover wouldn't this affect the high beam light pattern? I see others seem to have fitted the ballasts in this position as well so any advise much appreciated.

Cheers

:?

Can anyone help with above? Want to fit lights at week-end

Thanks in advance

Have you contacted HIDs-direct to ask them about forwarding you a set of instructions? That's what I'd do.

I've sent a mail message via their website, sent them an email and tried phoning them.

They haven't replied to either the mail message or the email and the phone just went to answerphone each time.

Very disappointing as I thought from other posts on this forum that they were a reputable, helpful company - it appears that I was wrong.

here you go (poor qual though, used iphone)

Seems strange as mine came with instructions too. Not that I can locate them now lol otherwise I'd have done what ranski's done. Can't fault them as a company.

Ranski, thanks for the instructions - very considerate.

I have worked out how each component connects together (as my previous post) but unsure whether its the blue or black wire (to be connected to the existing wiring) that is the positive I would have expected the positive to be red. I have noted that when these wire connect to the warning cancellor capacitor the blue wire connects to a red wire so on that basis I am assuming that the blue is the postive and the black the negative.

Also as I queried before it appears that Mintstuff has fixed the ballast to the side reflector section in the headlight casing in front of the high beam bulb - apart from being visible through the outer lens cover wouldn't this affect the high beam light pattern?

Cheers

Don't you just love the 'English' in the instructions. Gives one complete reassurance in the quality of the product

When the ballast if fixed inside the headlight unit it is not visible from the outside as the headlight has a sort of double skin. If you look inside your headlight through the rear cover you will see what I mean. This inner section is the part that allow the headlight to be damped from road virbrations.

Yes when I took the rear cover off I could see what you meant. I've fixed the ballast with double sided tape to the side of the back part of the housing next to the high beam connection. All working!

Did mine today (well a sparkie did) and im really impressed :) They are so bright and clear

They also changed over the ribbed lens to the clear ZKW-R len's that I bought - Also managed to hide the ballast and wires inside the headlight unit.

Some muggy iphone pictures below - thanks for all the info mintstuff and a11y
