Short, interesting article - mainly because I'd be interested in who got snapped in the photo :D

My brother always maintained that if the two holes on the back of a camera are closed it means the camera is off because they are cooling vents for the mechanism - anyone know if this is true ?

I personally prefer those signs that come up showing your speed... when i see them flash my speed up i do slow down. Speed camera's i slow down then speed up.

I particularly hate those average cameras.. really is no need for those, i see people fly down the M1 70+ in a 50, yet i dont know anyone booked from them.

They probably pull over to the inside lane when they pass a camera.

Glad I'm not the only one that wonders if everyone is getting booked in the (what seems to never end stretch of AVG 50 MPH cameras between Derby and London) when I'm sat there doing 50!

However, I know recently of a colleague that got booked for doing 60 through there, so maybe it's just a good tax system?!
 
Think you're right Bing, about the two air vents. Happier if they're off. But not bothered really as I never speed :roll:

Spotted a policeman in yellow jacket at lunch, was doing speed limit by the time he lifted up & had radar gun focused on me but he deffo wrote my plate down.

Didn't get stopped, anyone know thow the law stands here?

Yeah, sorry, meant to reference that. It is a speed camera day today...

@Jembo - I have been stopped in a 30 limit by a normal patrol car because they 'judged' I was speeding... I was doing just over 35 indicated, and I think they stopped me because I didn't brake around and when exiting a roundabout as it looked faster than it was. They called in a traffic car, had me breathalysed, then told me they had better things to do so there would be a caution against my reg. if I got stopped again within 12 months I would get a ticket. So you may get a caution through the post... I didn't though.

That's the point there, isn't it? - 'Better things to do'... and they used discretion / common sense...

A couple of years back, I got caught by a static speed camera. I knew it was there. I had set the cruise control at 40mph, which was the limit on that stretch of road. Except it didn't that day, 'cause they'd temporarily reduced it to 30mph because of some road works. I just didn't notice that they had changed the sign. I don't drive that road very often - it's a relief road that services lots of office blocks during the daytime, but is as quiet as the grave after 8pm. On this occasion, it was at 1:30 am - I was on my wife to pick my wife up from a works' bash - there were no cars around and certainly no pedestrians...

Now, in the past, had a patrol car been there and had pulled me over, I could have explained what had happened and all things equal, I might have got a warning - because they've got much better things to be doing with their time. Catching people drink driving. Nabbing ASBOs in nicked cars driving like idiots around housing estates. But, with a speed camera. Bang. Endorsement. No arguments.

Still bitter.... :thumbsdown:

A 'normal' patrol car can't nick anyone for speeding.....AFAIK only a traffic car, who's speedo has been calibrated in accordance with regulations, can do so, and even then its subject to the '1/4 mile rule' I believe.

Same with the unaimed radar gun - no reading = no evidence.
 
Yeah, though they could perhaps have you for reckless driving if they deemed it to be so. However they were just making a point to me I think - I was staggered when they called in the traffic car to breathalyse me, took a while for them to get there and took them off the road away from 'real' road offenders.

Can't imagine the traffic car was too impressed once they knew the score. :rofl:
 
I travel up and down M1 between J11 and J21A every week. Many cars and trucks just ignore the average speed camera between J11 and J13. Does anyone know if those cameras are really switched on?
