Had a go at light painting the car last night

This was complicated to get set up, requiring quite a bit of patience as i had never done it before. However a good friend was on hand to help as he does know about such matters, so he kept showing me how to improve and what different settings could do. The actual painting is trial and error but keeping the actual light source out of the camera's view is difficult.

Not entered these into the photo comp as i will have further goes at trying to get it right/better, but what do we all think? Oh and so pleased with interlargos blue as it really works under these light conditions.

THis is my favourite one, the dots are a flash gun being walked around the car

A much softer light

A few too many torch trails

Highlighting the bonnet features

One for Halloween

Going to have a go with different torches and red LED's in complete darkness, and a longer exposure looking to pick out some of the ground as well.

Try doing it somewhere where there is no light pollution you will get a better result.

Here is one i did a good while ago of my old car.

This was done by using a cheap LED torch from Tesco, tripod and a 20sec shuttter.

I think it's really good and puts my camera skills to shame.

Certainly the location and backdrop does the photo no favours, but you're experimenting

Location yes.

I went to a mates house last night to talk through all the articles i had read on the internet so that i could work out the advice for myself as many of the guides contradicted themselves. also i needed some guidance on how to actually use the camera, simple things to get the best from a shot like where to take light and focus settings from etc....Playing with WB and what it does. So we opened up his garage and had a play shooting the Z on the drive on a reasonable busy street. If you look carefully a reflection of a westfield from the garage can be seen in the wet bricks by the front wheel.

We did get a neighbour come over as we were seen smothering an outside house light and looking shifty.

Settings were
F8
Bulb shutter, estimated to be between 30 and 40seconds
18-55 VR lens on a Nikon D5100
ISO 100
WB tugsten
shot in Jpeg, these are the images as we took them.

raining here tonight so will try another day to do complete darkness or or an industrial backdrop. (nov calendar competition i am aiming for)

Like these a lot. Very TRON! Might have to give this a go myself. Maybe make it a monthly calendar comp theme?

Cool effect, it's a new one on me, I think the neighbours are a bit wary of me already without me going out now in the rain with a maglite and a camera. But damn I'm tempted ;)

Super cool pics... Never tried this, i might have a play and see if its within my ability

Toe side, I like the mirrors picked out, and the body above in dark...very moody.

Aquazi, it was not difficult, just a bit of patience. I suggest starting at f8 and in bulb/timer about 30 seconds or so, then just play. Wear dark clothes and be carful where you point the light.

Just have a play. Great fun. Small red light under the car me running round like a fool with a torch!
Learn new things every time.
