am spending next few hours doing a "buyers M car checklist" from all the info i have found/recieved

Apologies if you already know about it, but have you seen the checklist here - http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21281?

Cheers already see this

I'm just fine tuning the M "issues" if you like so far I have

+ Above buyer list and , a combination of the above

M Engine and Service Schedule:

Engine

Check the service book for the initial, 1200-mile service. This is where the fluids are changed from the run-in spec to the normal spec, and if it wasn’t done then serious wear could result.

Curiously, the throttle system can go out of tune. Resetting it can improve throttle response and its really simple to do: turn the ignition on and wait for 10 seconds, then turn it off for 10 seconds, then turn it on again for 10, then start the engine.

The crankcase ventilation oil separator assembly can clog with sludge; in extreme cases this can lead to combustible vapour building up in the intake and going bang in a big way when you next start the car. The valve is fitted to many BMWs and is one of the most ‘popular’ replacement parts!

Service History Should be:
Run in
Oil
Inspe 1 with valve clearances checked
Oil
Inspe 2 with valve clearances checked
Oil
Inspe 1 with valve clearances checked

Often sellers say valves are only checked at ins 2 but should be all ins First service interval 1200 miles which is the most important walk away otherwise.

CHECK:

Each Mot – Has the most recent got any advisories? If so what
Check Each Service, are they repeatable garage? If not Bmw which Indy – Car them check them out.
Call the garage that carried out the last service.
HAS its got 2 keys do they both work.
Check Bills and documentation.

Clutch Check:

Try accelerating in 6th from about 2k revs, it should still pull reasonably.
Also check it goes into all gears stationary

Others:

Obvious car checks, suspension probs one, check the strut braces these can crack near the strut tops, creaking at the back can mean worn anti roll bar bushes but theres nothing really that is renowned for going wrong. Their pretty bullet proof, service intervals are very important as long as the history is good I would say go for it. Get one with the best pos spec obviously
Check the alloys for erosion mine had a lot of pitting so had them refurb them before pick up too.

In terms of rust you shouldn't really be seeing any rust and BMWs come with a 10 year corrosion warranty. Seen as tho the M was introduced in 06 there shouldn't be any signs of rust and walk away if there is, as I would say they have had a hard life

Another thing to look for is the upgraded 10 speaker system with DSP, the standard system is crap and the upgrade is much better but still lacks down low. But worth having, also cruise is quite a rarity depending whether you want that, Bluetooth and telematics is very useful I use mine all the time, heated seats, upgraded headlining, personally prefer the carbon leather interior dash, I dont think the piano interior suits the M but looks nice on the 3.0l SI coupes. Last thing I can think of is auto dimming mirrors.

Brakes and Discs Must Check:

brake discs are a packet so check for wear on them. tyres are a packet so check for life on them. if these two things are nearing the end of their life
Have a quick shifty at brake pads you can see the depth if you turn the wheel to its furthest point and get down close, and obviously the discs these can have lips and a full replacement is expensive. Obviously tyres make sure they have good tread because again another extra you don't want to pay for, and they are suitable for the vehicle.

Cheer guys it a little rought but I will be there with this and the buyers check list and a pen checking off :D

I here they can be a little rattley on start up , what do you need to check / look out for on the Vanos side of things? been on you tube a little looking at this

there's 4 cars AUC, the premium to me appears to be nearer £4-5k. the only reason for the warranty is if you've w@nked all your cash on the initial purchase, and the day to day running costs take up all your disposable income.

nothing's free!

just my opinion... :)

Not necessarily, I dont know about you but when I buy a car from a dealer regardless if its second hand or new it shouldn't go wrong for the time I own it (usually 2 years) and will make sure that I am covered. With a private sale I feel it is more likely something will go wrong and although cheaper initially it can be more expensive further down the road. Not always true and I am generalising but it gives me peace of mind. Especially with higher milage cars.

Its more that i trust BMW that the car is ok to buy because it has the checks and the private sale there might be something lurking that even the trained eye might not spot. Like mine with the ECU window motor etc etc.

Its not so much the money isnt there its more the fact I dont want to spend any more on the car. Especially when the car is expensive initially having someone to fall back on is a god send, especially if your like me and am not particularly mechanically minded.

You have to remember that a BMW garage does all the checks makes sure it is suitable for running for the terms of its warranty so tyres brakes etc whereas a private sale is more likely its at the end of its tax and insurance and probs needs a little work but on these cars the wearable items cost a lot more than their standard counterparts.

Generally for a good average milage Z4Mc your looking at £15-16k current private prices with room for manoeuvre.

The ones on BMW atm are all very expensive tho but push and you will get exactly what you want otherwise walk away. They will ring you up wanting you to buy it mine is a good example of that.

On start up they all rattle no need to worry. Clutch in and the rattle isnt there its a well known fault but is very different to the 3.0si just expect it :)

When driving they also tick dont worry about that either they are tapperty its the nature of the motor.

you'll know when you hear it, if there's a problem with the vanos it's a 'dry' tap, the S54 has a bit a a 'tappy' sound on tickover, but once the oil's circulated it should mute somewhat.

to be honest, it wasn't a great problem with the later m straight 6's, it plagued the e36 engines.

good luck!

like i said, it depends on your personal circumstances.

it's the same as the argument for buying new v buying second hand, depending on what you do personally you can always come up with figures to back up your contention.

Guys you have all been so helpful so thankyou.. especialy Tom & JaEdba

I hope after all this she’s worth it

Even done my Si Advert in waiting that am joining the M division
