Guy Martin Spitfire

I watched it last night and I just couldn't believe the accuracy required. Such as the cyclinder size to attach the wings needing to lose the thickness of hairs to fit. But oh the sound of it at the end was just glorious.

Great program as always from Guy.I struggle to see it as the original plane though, bit like triggers broom really.Great all the same though

Regarding it being like Triggers Broom I recently found their is a paradox called the Ship Of Theseus that covers this

I had the same struggle, by the end of the program they were calling it a 'restoration' project which it clearly wasn't. It was more of a beautifully made 'replica'.

Great nostalgic TV nevertheless.

I couldn't remember the details of the paradox, Perry normally wheels that one out.

The sound of that Spitfire engine just took me back to watching war films with my dad ,happy days :)

There are at least 2 x twin seaters based at Goodwood , we get them doing aerobatics over the house together ,
you are right there is no mistaking the sound of the merlin ,magic ................and two at the same time :)

I guess it all boils down to how much of the original plane was used. They weren't specific, just muttered about some 'bits'. Probably one or two nuts and bolts :)

Some people may have watched it but here is one of his short films he did for channel 4 about his most prized possession a Merlin Engine...... absolute legend!

Cheers, haven't seen it so will watch it now.

Its on 4 on demand

Cracking TV and Guy is a legend. I'm sure you have all seen it but if you haven't then you need to watch 'Closer To The Edge'.

Do love his stuff though, the shows where he was going through the industrial revolution are another to look out for.

I've never seen that clip, loved it. Thanks for the link

Great all the same though

i know what you mean, but its just because that plane actually existed and was recovered from the crash site. its all about provenence. if you
just made one out of new copy parts it would be virtually the same but worth a lot less to the purists because it never existed in a previous life.

talking of triggers broom, it always baffles me with say land rovers for instance. if you bought a brand new land rover and swapped an old number plate onto it , that is classed as ringing a car, if you have an old land rover , you canbuy a new one and bit by bit put all the bits on the old one including the chassis and you have rebuilt the old one but it is in effect a brand new vehicle. it is then tax exempt too if the old one is pre 1971. seems a little strange, wonder if its actually been done. :o

Not sure you could actually do that, take a 2014 LR and make it into a 1971 one. The chassis/body has a vin, that would need to stay with it.

There was a guy on DW who had a rotten shell on a Peugeot 205. He bought a new shell and was going to move everything over including the numberplates until it was pointed out that would be illegal

Also think about kit cars. To get a non Q plate some of the key components need to come from one vehicle to be able to use the age related plate.

This method of rebuilding old cars is common in the classic car world. The only key feature I can detect is the avialabilty of new parts with a part number. So my tr6 can be rebuilt with a new chassis (bought new from British motor heritage with original part number), new body panels (also available), buy new any bits available and recon anything that you can't get new. I'd keep the vin, reg and tax status but have a collection of new parts the same as if I'd bought a new car. BUT, if I used an imported rust free shell, good used engine and shopped around for used but serviceable parts from scrapped cars then the car should undergo a VIC and most likely be issued a Q plate. Only ever heard of it happening twice!

Grey area!

Agree, in LR circles re-ageing cars only seems to be found on vehicles upto the mid 90s models. It's surprisingly easy to turn a 1990 LR90 into a 'series 2' tax free 1960 vehicle. Only need a screwdriver and biro!
