Gunge in oil cap

I've noticed steam /condensation coming from the exhaust most of the time just lately so I checked the oil today and it was clean "ish", no signs of gunge on the dipstick. I took the oil cap off and found it gunged up so gave it a clean. I also checked the coolant expansion bottle thinking I might have gasket trouble but found the bottle was full.
Am I being paranoid about gasket problems or could it be me just doing short trips in this cold weather??
Is the 3.0 prone to gasket problems??

Hi Russ, is this the search you were having issues with?

I don't have any experience with this myself, but have a look at this thread... Yellow Gunk

Sounds like you got it in one with the short trips in the cold weather, but as always, keep an eye on it. There may be others with firsthand experience along later - can get a little slow during opening hours!

As for the search... I only found it because I remembered the word "sludge". The search issue is a forum thing, not just this site. For me, one day it just seemed to click.

Yeah, I typed in numerous different things to do with oil and gunge and was getting things up to do with the radio and seats. ??????

I'v had oil/gunge probs in the past and just been put down to short trips but didnt know if there was any issues with BMW.

Cheers
