no, this is a tape that is around all the cables. You need to remove about 10 cm of it to be able to get to the actual cables.

Just slightly concerned about this. Never soldered anything before nor do i have a soldering kit handy so it's out of the question should the installation go wrong. Gaptech/PVR any advice?

...don't break the cable. otherwise a soldering iron costs about $10, learning to solder on your Z.. priceless.

Really hope this arrives in AUS by the weekend, would love a little weekend project.

Make sure the wire runs/sits in the slot before closing the scotch block, and this "shouldn't" happen. If it does you could simply use a terminal block, homebase, b&q, maplin etc will sell them for about £1, or you could use crimps ( but you need a tool £5 and crimps £1 ). Or you could be a cowboy and just twist them together and cover with insulation tap - not advisable, but it would work :evil:
 
gmetcalf, that is exactly what happened. The "slot" was too small (i.e. the metal bits were touching), so by closing it, it just worked like a knife.

All the scotchlocks I had were like that, hence me abandoning the use of them.
 
Yes, the scotchloks are provided.
This latest batch I've received do seem to have a smaller gap although it's the same ones as supplied with the OTH.
It might be worth just opening the gap a little using the blade of a flat screwdriver, just push it into the gap and twist a little.

What would happen if the wire did snap and I didn't quite have the means to join them together. Would I just not be able to use the roof for a while?

If you can't do a proper fix immediately I'd still twist them together and tape them up until you can fix it properly.
 
:( tried to fit it at lunch time, all the connectors used and all appeard to have closed properly, but no worky :( have had to reassemble everything as i need the car tonight, so have left everything in situ, but will take it all appart at a later date and use a soldering iron on it, think a connection isnt working somewhere :(

EDIT: For referance the roof does still work, so no issues there :)
 
If neither one touch nor remote work, check the black wires as they are the one in common to earth.
 
nope neither work, i will have a check at some point, but i am away for a few days as of tonight so wont get a chance for a while.
 
Definitely sounds like a connection problem. Get an ohmmeter and some sharp probes and measure the impedance between the module wires and the loom by piercing through the insulation of the wire with the point of the probe. This should show you where the problem is.
 
Vidge. I have tried as well and I have the same problem too. I dont think my stotchlocks have given a connection between the existing wiring and the module. Will try again tonight!
 
Solder it guys, but don't leave the power connected if using a mains solder.

Did you cut the wire then solder, or did you somehow strip it halfway down?
 
The first wire I cut via the scotchlock accidently so had to extend it as it was then too short to rejoin.

The other wires I just used a knife to expose the wiring by stripping a bit away, wind the new wire around that exposed bit and top off with solder. That way, the old wire was never cut.
 
All fitted, no cut wires and a bonus find of £1.27 under the ashtray.....result!

Just need to take the hardtop off to test it :D
