Grinding when reversing and turning wheel

Guys

This issue is on my things to look at under warranty - but wanted to get your take on it also.

Bascially, when im in reverse and the wheel is turned, maybe even on or almost at full lock, i hear a grinding noise when the car is in motion - not when stopped.
The noise is similar to when a anti roll bar link has snapped or something similar - as i had this on my previous E46

Any suggestions? I havent looked under the car yet - its on 22k and is a 2006 2.5si

Cheers
Jamie

First thing to do is look under on the wings and see if anything is obviously touching. Next stop would be to look at the brakes, dust shield, pads and see if anything is amiss there. Grinding sounds more likely brakes than tyres touching.

Beyond that just take it into the dealer when you are sure you can replicate the noise

If its on full lock it might be that if u changed the settings on steering its not locked properly. I had similar problem. I resetted it and locked it properly and it sorted out. good luck with urs.

If it's when reversing on a full-ish lock, then it may well be just the front tyres skidding/dragging rather than rolling. It seems to be a feature of all cars, presumably due to the suspension geometry.

There's a thread about it here: - http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8029

Yep, I've noticed that on full lock it is very tight and they can scrub alot and sound like grinding a little, most noticeable reversing into parking spaces.

I think Jamiez has to come back with more specifics on the noise to continue diagnosis.

Is it one lock only or both?
Grinding (which I always take to be more of a metal on metal) or normal tyre scrub in reverse due to geometry, etc.
Any visible marks?

I'll bet it's tyre scrub, it can sound quite alarmimg. Mine has it, so does my wife's MX5 on wide 16" wheels. It's like a grinding, scraping noise, really not a nice sound, but normal I rekon.

Every day i reverse my car out of the driveway (down a very slight gradient) i get the same grinding noise that you describe. As previously stated seems more like tyre scrub reverberating through the front wheels than anything serious. Function of tight suspension geometry i dont know. I've ignored the noise for 3 years and as yet never had any problem....

Yea, well the car is going back for other warranty work so getting them to check it out - JUST IN CASE :)

Always best to play it safe, noticed a strange whirring noise coming from the steering column when i spin the wheel just recently....spoke too soon obviously doh!
