Grinding noise when reverse

I have an automatic transmission on my Z4. I noticed a grinding noise when I shiftted to Reverse. It feels like the gears are hard to engage. I had to force it in. This doesn't happen all the time. Most of the time, the shifting is smooth. I took it to the dealer. The guy told me this is normal for BMW. Many owners had the same problem. I wonder any of you had the same experience?

Thanks.

Doesn't sound normal to me. Mine doesn't do it.

I'd be inclined to take it back, or speak to BMW customer service.

 Normal eh, did you buy it like that?...........certainly not 'normal'.

*Edited* Due to making no sense.........it was the wine!

I can think of no reason why an auto should grind and be considered normal. Worst you might get is the odd clunk when the dirive line tightens, but that said mine is silent

Grinding + having to force it into gear is not good at all. I wouldn't trust that dealer.

Check the transmission fluid?

I've been in one or two automatics and no noise at all going in reverse. My manual atm doesn't make noises either, though I do occasionally have a tough time getting it in first/reverse. :?

Took the car back to the dealer. They couldn't figure out what is exactly wrong with the car. However, they agree that there is definitely something wrong with the transmission. This might be a better description of the problem. When I s**t into Reverse. It feels like the car was parked on the slope, and hard to shift in. The car was parked in garage on a flat surface. This problem rarely happens. It happens maybe once every 30-50 shifts. Anyhow, the dealer said they would change the whole transmission. Thank god, it is covered under warranty. My question now is, how rebuilding transmission is gonna affect the overall performance of the car? Will it be the same as original? Anyone has experience with a rebuilt transmission. Oh, I have 34,000 miles on my car.

Glad the dealer has agreed to go ahead and fix it. If it's BMW I'm sure it will be an new transmission, although if one put through a refurb process will be as good as OEM and carry their gaurantees.

If another type of dealer and they substitute a different quality of transmission you cannot be sure of any workmanship. That said it's under warranty so will be fixed whatever.

I have used rebuilt transmissions on Jeeps and frankly you'd never know if it was brand new or not. Most transmission failures being only fluid issues, valving or friction bands and are simple fixes anyway.
