Apologies - misread the BBC website - I wouldn't watch this race out of principle but couldn't not look up what happened just in the hope that this year there were no casualties.
 
3 horses died in that drama 'luck' on sky atlantic which got it canceled. but lots of money involved and very important people have too much of a say with the GN
 
Not a horse racing fan, nor am I against it.

Does to me seem a great shame that a race has to be so tough that so many horses fall and yet a again some die. Doesn't really seem like a sport to me when that happens.
 
if it was any other sport would be banned, its all about the money

if this was in a foreign country we would all be up in arms
 
The jumps were reviewed and made easier this year,BUT,still horses had to be destroyed.It needs to be a tough race, but to lose thoroughbred racehorses like this is not good for the sport.I know it's a brutal business with loads of money involved, but, it cannot be worth the loss of these animals.Who knows if any more will have to be destroyed this week following other injuries. Not a fan I'm afraid. :thumbsdown:
 
if it was any other animal there wouldnt be a problem. most horse accidents are leg related and its impossible to fix so it makes scence. imagine how many house pets would die if that was the case
 
Im all for making sport challenging but you are talking about animals here that are simply not designed to take such high demanding jumps.

If a jockey wants to risk his life its his choice. If an F1 driver wants to push hard and risk life its his choice. If a boxer whats to risk brain damage its his choice. What choice does a horse have? One of the two that died was clearly distressed beforehand. When you look at stills of the jumps you can see the terror in the horses eyes

Animal cruelty at its best (akin to all other elitest bigotted sports such as foxhunting, showjumping and polo)

Totally agree. Jumping fence should be abandoned in Grand National.

dogs are put to work all the time against bigger animals for pest control and i knew a police dog that had its head split open by some thug. yes its for a purpose rather than a sport but still an animal gets hurt.

also i bet wild horses must hurt them self all the time!
 
an horses instinct is to bult when scared, i wild horse would not gallop for 4 miles

these horse are just pushed too much
 
I'm not so concerned about horses jumping fences and getting injured. I am far more concerned about why they "must" be destroyed because they break a leg. It's BS that they have to be put down. Just like its BS that greyhounds need to be put down when they stop racing (as many are). Maybe the bookmakers, course owners and the horse owners should pay a levy to a charity that could ensure a happy healthy retirement for these animals who can no longer race.
 
There's too much money made to ban it.

I work for a company that make software for bookies, so I know the numbers. one of our customers had over 2.8 million bets made on Saturday just through their shops.

Don't get me started. I detest the Grand National. It's animal cruelty as far as I'm concerned.

Jump races are ok but the national is a step way too far in my opinion.

I'm going to shut up as I feel a rant coming on. :thumbsdown: :thumbsdown: :thumbsdown:
 
Been racking my brains trying to remember who I used to talk to at Finsoft without any joy. There may have been a Tarig but I'm not sure, they were mostly Eastern European I think.
