Gracenote DB Updates

I'd bet that if you copied it from a USB stick it would just overwrite the existing file...?

Can't imagine it would be much else normally, why reinvent the wheel, but its not very big is it - did I hear 12Gb mentioned? In which case it could just be a large flash drive, like a memory card or something....

I'd suspect codec data is firmware based; I think it normally is for a device to be able to play other non-MP3 formats - when you download codec files to a PC I think it normally makes registery changes to tell applications where to look for the appropriate codec - and in a small device like this the registry would be firmware normally....

I think the drive is 40Gb+ in total (unless it is more than one) as it hosts the navigation mapping, any contact data, etc, etc . . . and, of course, the Gracenote DB which is where we came in. I understand the screen is made by Alpine. I'm not sure if the other stuff is also from them but, if so, I'll base any experimentation around what works on versions of their OS. When I had an X5 a while back, I was able to get some Alpine peripherals to work off the (Alpine supplied) OE CD changer bus cable.

Probably a standard laptop-type drive then. The only potential limitation to upsizing it would be in the firmware, as per some HDD-based MP3 players...
