That can be repaired for around your excess charge, do not go through your insurance as you will have a fault claim on file and be paying for it dearly for the next few years, equally its madness if you are only keeping the rented car for a couple of months longer! Even if you do go through your insurance they will not replace with new parts for a bump and will repair the areas.

Garage haven't come back to me as yet, but I can insist on replacement parts as don't want a bodge job with filler, will see.

If paying with your own cash yes, an insurance company will not pay for new on a bump like that which can be repaired.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a well executed repair !
Plastic clips etc can be "welded" on and once fixed we wouldn't notice the difference.
Who is going to remove a bumper panel to check?

I dare bet that cars damaged being offloaded from the docks / transporters are fettled this way and do we notice?

Yes Matt, my insurers BMW have given the dealer the go ahead and I'm just paying my excess which is still 400 quid, ouch. I've been plaguing local shops around the car park where the damage occurred with mixed help. Two shops have CCTV but only covering the car park outside their shop entrance. Another shop told me to get lost in effect but wandering if I can get the police involved but I doubt they would be interested. I contacted a tyre place nearby and they do have CCTV footage which looks to show my car but it's just too far away to show anything for certain. There is a van that could be the culprit but you can't actually see anything that confirms if it definitely hit my car, the tyre place was really helpful to be honest. Unless I have any witnesses it's going to be impossible.

I'm a member of a website called Streetwise which is like a local community gossip forum so I'm going to post on there and also on the local Facebook community pages. It's along shot but it's a small world and someone may have seen something. Would love to track the person who did the damage down.

Thats great news for you Tim, out of a s**t situation (although I do think you are mad if you are giving it back shortly!) Having worked for insurance companies and knowing how they operate it does surprise me they are replacing rather than repairing!

Thanks Matt, we'll see when I collect the car. I did ask the lady at BMW as I was pressing home the plastic diffuser is slightly damaged as well as the bumper which the photos didn't show too well as its dark grey. She confirmed that they will be fitting a complete new bumper assembly, I don't know if its because I'm going through BMW Insurance, all in house and that. It did cross my mind not having it repaired and handing the car back with the damage but wandered if I did that they would cane me with the full repair price and then just get it repaired at trade cost. At least at the moment I'm just paying the excess but will have to see if I'm hit bad come insurance renewal time, although it is a non fault claim not that makes any difference.

Other things running through my mind is colour match etc with it being silver which won't do my OCD much good :roll:

Don't worry about colour match - my wife's Audi was bumped in the rear door and it needed some work to put it all right again -- after paint and in any light it could no be seen - the car was silver grey!

There is some legal issues with them giving out the CCTV images in terms of Data Protection however your insurer or the police can request them for the purposes of investigating what is tantamount to leaving the scene of an accident, its definitely worth doing, if you get an angle that shows the impact with enough of an ID of the vehicle and the exact time you might be able to use other CCTV to spot the vehicle and get the Reg. Pain in the tits and frankly the police will drag their heels claiming there is nothing they can do but a criminal offence has been committed here.

Thanks for the advice, a local tyre fitters does have some CCTV footage as I was able to narrow the time to within 5 minutes in the day. Problem is the footage is so poor all it shows is a flatbed type van reversing close to my car. To me I would say it's the culprit as its fits with the type of damage on the car in that something was sticking out from the flatbed. Whether I could get further footage from elsewhere I could be struggling as the exit of the car park goes onto a dual carriageway, even then proving anything would be nigh on impossible without witnesses. Exactly the same happened 16 months ago to my Z3 but only cost me 70 quid to get the denting taken out. Unfortunately this time it's going to be far more expensive. I bet these types of accidents happen thousands of times a day across the country.

Nightmare It is very hard to prove, that's why the cops are less than enthusiastic to pursue it
I tend to try and park in places that look like they have CCTV coverage but its annoying that we have to do it thanks to inconsiderate bawsacks

I'm the same, completely anal when it comes to parking on public car parks but this time I let my guard down as I was only going into the shop for a few minutes.

I can't think of a better way to competely waste 400 quid unecessarily :x

I think a "proper" approved paint shop will be fine - paint technology is a science these days and they will be painting more expensive cars than ours!

I'm told they have a well defined process for applying and curing the paint - it might be worth having a chat with the bodyshop / paint shop manager if you're in any way concerned. I'm sure he will be happy to tell you what he will be doing and what he will be doing to ensure the process all goes to plan.
He will know that if his staff do it wrong that they'll have it to do again !
