Got some VW Fault Codes

Got a stressed call from the gf today en route home from mini-inkey$ playgroup. Our Mk4 Golf decided to go into limp mode 4 miles from home in rush hour. God knows how she managed to get it home; running like a dogs dinner!

Been out and plugged in the OBD2 to scan for codes:

16804: Oxygen sensor/control faulty
16684: Random Misfire Detected - Any Cylinder
16686: Cylinder #2 - Misfire detected
16687: Cylinder #3 - Misfire detected

That plan for a new family town car may need to be brought forwards :headbang:

Mate most obd scanners throw you way off , get it done with vagcom or a proper one like texa or similar .

Thanks lotus791. Usually I'd agree but it does sound like it's running off of only 2 cylinders!

What engine ?

Coils are very common to go on most VAG stuff..

The fact that its 2/3 together may indicate that headgasket has gone though..The Oxy sensor fault maybe twanged because it cant regulate whats coming at from bad combustion..

Do basic checks like water/oil mix in engine/header tank.. Compression test ...If all ok,try a couple of coils but like i say it seem odd to have blown 2 together..

Thanks Z4M-2006. It's a 1.6 petrol.

I'll check the basics this weekend. My VW garage in Charlton may need to take a look.

As advised it'll be the coils. My Dad bought my sister a Polo to learn to drive, the coils went as he got home but the final straw was a coil pack failing at 70mph in the outside lane of the M8. VW gave him
A new car which occasionally has this issue but it's a simple and cheap fix.

Usually £30 for a coil pack and you may need a new spark. You'll be able to tell what pack is gone when you check the sparks.

VW garage advised this failure was due to 'supermarket' fuel and to use V Power every few tanks but actually it's just a bad design as it happens even using premium fuel.

Good luck with getting it sorted. Hopefully it is just the coils and nothing else too serious.

If you can get me the part numbers off the coils i might even have a couple of second hand ones in my toolbox..

I could flirt them up to you to try..?

Eurocarparts have two listed for my engine identification. Single unit ignition coil.

413440290 - £80.30
413440291 - £57.17

I'm guessing one is Bosch and one is no-name.

Still stranded. Started her up today to take a look under the bonnet and couldnt even hold revs. May have to get garage to pick her up or considering mobile mechanic. Anybody know of one in SE London/Kent area? Prime suspect is still the ignition coil.

Frustrating as we needed to go out today and it was p*ssing it down. Only other vehicle I have has two seats for the three of us, so we walked and got very, very wet :headbang:

bremi coil packs well known, I had 330 with loads of codes thrown that went back to dodgy fuel filter, and (in my opinion KN air filter) so called gurus at dealers follow codes blindly without realising the basics of how an engine works ..

Turns out my OBD2 scanner is spot on. Autocraft in Charlton (highly recommended btw) took the Golf in yesterday and same faults diagnosed. Turned out to be less than prime condition leads and a cracked ignition coil so all replace and running sweetly on 4 cylinders again

Anybody want to buy a 2001 1.6 Golf auto on 37k miles with fsh?!
