Got one....

Well I was looking for a 147 GTA Alfa, but I’ve ended up with a Z4 3.0, long story….

Really like the car more than I thought I would, never has a car had such an instant impact on me – I think this is because its my first convertible.

A few typically dumb newbie questions…..

1) I assume the ‘business CD’ player I have does not play MP3 CD’s? This is a shame and I will miss this from my old stereo. Also is it possible to somehow get an iPod connection on it, maybe by using the autochanger as the iPod connection if that makes sense? I.e ditch the changer for the iPod.
2) Someone told me about clear lenses, anyone got a pic of a Z4 with this? They seem fine as they are too me though.
3) Wind defector, I’d like to see more pics of a Z4 with this as thinking it might ruin the looks slightly. Also do they make much difference, I’m 6ft 3” so it’s a tad breezy on the motorway.
4) Who is the best regarded Essex specialist? I need an oil service soon but also wanted a health check too just to be safe.

Anyway enjoying the car, very well made and nice and tight to drive.

hi shabba.. where abouts in essex are you?? i currently own a 330ci and always take my car to a guy who works for bmw but doesnt charge bmw labour costs.. he is awesome and havent had a problem with him since

Hi and Welcome...

Think you'll find it will play MP3's depending on the year of the car! I could be wrong but mine plays MP3's, 2006 model though! As for iPod connector, search the forum, for a DICE or Intravee...

Welcome, itll be more reliable than an Alfa....

t20lau is right depends on the year of your vehicle and colour of your stereo... someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly :D

Sorry its the grey stereo, further reasearch seems it won't play them. 53 Plate car.

As for servicing etc then I'd want to keep to a specialist or main dealer, just so it gets the stamps in the book as these are important come re-sale time. However that guy you know could be handy for other jobs. Although I have 2 friends who own other marque garages too. (rather handy).

hi,
if you go into the gallery section and drop down to "newbie pics as promised" i have photos there of my car with the wind deflector fitted.
enjoy your zed............

I have the factory fit wind deflector and IMHO its well worth it.
Some people say they cant tell the difference but I notice a world of difference.
Trying to find some pics for you as we speak.
I dont think it affects the looks.
The fully fitted one has rails that attach to the roll hoops and the deflector can be put i or removed from there.
Its a very nice system. It stors on rails on the boot lid when not in use.

the "add on" ones that just sit OVER the hoops are less appealing to me to be honest and can look ropey IMHO.

Its about £250-300 for the rear light clusters with clear indicators plus side repeators with clear lenses plus fitting.
God knows how much it is to match the front ones.
I may do the sides only at around £20 a pop on mine but I havent decided yet. :)

Great shout on the pics Fish!

Here are the two OEM parts for direct comparison

As you can see, the second one goes "over" the hoops and is more of a compromise on style.

great post, thanks! Where can I get the 1st one, the proper one that doesnt go over the hoops, how much are those ones?

I think that might be a dealer only fit.
Or maybe your local independant BMW specialist could source one and fit it for you.
Very likely.

I'd defo reccomend the first one over the second or any third party ones.

oem one in (1) above are on ebay usually for about £100 for the retrofit kit, can find a part number if you're desperate.

the later mp3 radio's come up a fair bit too, keep an eye on ebay and it's a straight swap, although you'll want to get new black vents too to make it match.

Bugger, mine had a new radio under warranty, I bet they cost the same and everything... :(

Could have got a nice new vent to match as well...

Hey ho.

Yeah, The pukka ones that slot in and out and stow in the boot are the only way to go. However and its a big however... Get your dealer to do it and pin him down to a price cos I fitted my own and it was a nervous time. The dealer downloaded and gave me the fitting instructions (9 pages and all symbols..no words) and it turns out when you take the roll over hoop covers off to fit the guides you cannot help but break some of the clips and the covers need replacing. Not too bad if you just got the chrome or grey/silver finish, about 30 quid a side. But if you got extended leather then you on for about 400 quid a side! I aint joking...that is what I was quoted. They actually supply diffrent covers for use with the deflector cos it needs little cut outs to accomodate the little screens in the hoops. Mine had to be stuck back together with araldite and G clamps overnight. Look fine now ..BUT NEVER AGAIN

I trawled the classifieds for one for a while but ended up going to a stealer for one. Cost me £227 for the whole kit, was initially quoted £200 to fit then £125 but decided to fit it myself.
The only real difficult part is prising apart the existing hoop covers. Once this is done its just a matter of fitting the new hoop covers with the window inserts, then fixing the brackets to them which hold the centre piece. Along with the brackets that fix in the boot lid where the centre piece can be stored.
