Got hit by a coach - now an awful smell

Just been hit by a coach at traffic lights and he just drove off at full speed. Damage to bodywork is remarkablt slight (two scratches to n/s corner of front bumper)givern the car really moved when hit.

I got really flustered as the coach drove off and couldn't find 1st gear so lots of clutch slipping got me away in 3rd maybe even 5th - I must have slipped the clutch quite a bit for 100 yards. Horrible smell.

Trouble is I still get the smell even after letting it cool down for 30 minutes - car drives just fine but there is that distincyive pong of burnt clutch. Is it that easy to fry the clutch totally on a 2.0 L Z4?

Got the coach registration after chasing him half a mile and police will be informed as he absolutely refused to stop! :headbang:

Wow - amazing. Hopefully you will have pain off the coach to prove it.

The clutch smell willlinger for sometime. I'd be very suprised if oyu have done any long term damage to it after such a short incident unless it was already tired and on its way out. Have a drive tomorrow and I'm sure it will be fine. You can test it by putting it in a high gear and accelerating hard from low speed, If damaged that's when it will slip most.

Sorry to hear that, makes me very angry.Believe me, if it had hit me he would have stopped.Only running out of fuel would have stopped me.

Thanks for the support :) but what's peoples views about the smell - I really find it hard to believe I could have danaged the clutch in one go and the car drives perfectly but it smells of burnt clutvh even after letting it coold down. It is a 2.0 L - are these clutches known to be fragile? :(

if cluth isnt slipping it should be fine- get the roof off and gon for a good run to cleqar the smell!

As above, the smell hangs about for ages, get the roof down go for a drive to air the smell out. :driving:

I thought I had answered the question in my initial post and a suggested test? There are no specific problems as far as I know or have heard related to 2.0i clutches

Thanks cj10jeeper and all.

She runs fine so took her for a blast - still a lingering smell even after 20 odd fast miles but clutch appears not to be slipping. Slight judder when starting off in first gear but by the end of the run even that has gone.

It is amazing how the smell hangs around in the engine bay - like being followed arounf by a basket full of rottimg fish! I guess just keep driving it and it should go away.

It's the clutch dust/debis that smells which is sitting in your gearbox bellhousing, it will stop smelling after a while.

I got a kick and scare from the heading of "got hit by a coach". Here in the US the word coach has a different meaning. ( ya I know we don't speak real english). But my son in law is a basketball coach and I would hope you would not have a smell if he hit you unless you crapped your pants, :D :poke:
