Got caught doing 38mph in a 30 zone: £100 fine?!?!

Yep, maximum for FPN is now £100 plus 3 points

Milking the motorists

Well the speeding motorist at least!

If you don't like the consequences of being caught - don't speed and you will not get milked!!!

Exactly, same with parking fines, or driving in bus lanes (even if you only cut off the last 20m!!), you's know the rules, simples.

Also, let's face it, it's not like you get caught every time you sped! Now imagine that as a consequence @ £100 / time.

Ah sorry Nitrix, did'nt see your post on it mate.

What mmm-five is saying makes sense but these guys I saw we're way over that speed, guess we'll never know, would be really interesting to know though.

I think £100 is a lot for a FPN (and not for one moment suggesting I haven't speeded, before holier than thou comments arise) but just an observation as you comment 'going over by just 8mph' (c30%):

From:
"Relationship between Speed and Risk of Fatal Injury: Pedestrians and Car Occupants", Road Safety Web Publication No.16, Department for Transport, September 2010

Approximately two-thirds of all crashes in which people are killed or injured happen on roads with a speed limit of 30 mph or less. At 35 mph a driver is twice as likely to kill someone as they are at 30 mph.

At 30 mph, vehicles travel 44 feet (about 3 car lengths) every second.

Even in good conditions, the difference in stopping distance between 30 mph and 35 mph is an extra 21 feet, more than 2 car lengths.

For pedestrians struck by cars, the risk of being killed increases slowly until impact speeds of around 30 mph, but above this speed, the risk increases rapidly. A pedestrian hit by a car travelling at between 30 mph and 40 mph is 3.5 to 5.5 times more likely to be killed than one struck by a car travelling at less than 30 mph. Elderly pedestrians have a much greater risk of suffering fatal injuries than other age groups

The other weekend I went past 3 junctions at 50 in roadworks on the M1 and I must have seen at least half a dozen, if not more, cars doing easy 60-65, barging said outside lane hoggers out of the way. I don't get it, either they know something we don't about the overhead gantry average camera's or just don't give a chuff. I really can't fathom it.
I posted something very similar a few weeks ago about the average speed cameras on the M74.
%0mph zone for miles and people going past at over 80mph.
It IS like they all know something we dont.

Presumably they're all wearing srhutch's number plate :P

All true CJ, but there are too many 30 zones now that used to be 60 even. By making inappropriate 30 zones where it is even impossible to have any pedestrians on or near the road, it is very easy to do at least 40 as it was 60 only a few months back.

Of course when previously 'fast' roads become restricted for seemingly no reason and no chance of pedestrians or other issues, it's frustrating.

The one's that I don't understand are the cars going through the average speed camera sections (especially on the M62) who travel at "excessive" speed, then slam on the brakes for the cameras, then speed up again. What part of "average" is so difficult to understand?

I frequently travel up and down the M1 and these roadworks are the bane of my life!

But there was a news article recently which had stated thousands of pounds of revenue raised in just one weekend by the 16 miles if av speed camera's.

I personally dont know anyone who has been caught by av camera's - and i set my CC to 55 mph on them and people fly past me!

some are quite sneaky with rear facing cameras too.

Funny/strange, but irritating that. Darwin awards candidates I reckon.

Last week travelled up to Durham for a funeral - 750 miles in two days :( those miles and miles of 50 mph on M1 were an absolute pain - kept to limit but loads of vehicles passed us - saw some atrocious driving mainly by White Van Man - as said before some lorries were also horrendous - driving only feet between each other and steaming up behind you on the inside lane trying to intimidate - fortunately I come from a long line of unimpressibles so I just ignore them !

38 mph in a 30 zone should qualify for a speed awareness Course .

On the M6 50mph SPECs I set my cruise to 60mph, which is about 56mph real speed. Not had a ticket at that speed in the 3 years they've been there. What pisses me off though is the tossers who sit in L3 at 50mph on the clock when there's 2 fairly empty lanes to the left of them.

I never actually wrote that... (I wrote that I followed a speed van through roadworks)

If you look closely, that's MMM's quote not mine. He's tried to edit a post and made a hash of it !

This is how it should have appeared...

Interesting comment in a thread about being caught speeding, driving on the limit of being caught by average speed cameras :o and then criticising drivers who stay to that limit in the same zones :fuelfire:

....Sorted ! (You've got to get your quotes in the right place ...) :D

i heard lorries are allowed to continute @ 56mph through the specs as it is safer for the environment at that speed, don't quote me on that though!

The trucks that I sometimes drive will only hit 54 to 55 max. In road works I sit at 50 in the nearside lane (only lane for vehicles over 6.6 ft wide) and will undertake other vehicles in the 2 outer lanes, this is called making progress, I always try to keep a distance between me and the vehicle in front, but some drivers think this gap is for them to cut into (bloody dangerous), once out of the road works I can only go back up to 54/55.
I live in a 30 mph village and it really pisses me off when drivers blast through the village at 50 mph and faster in some cases. Throw the book at them I say.
I agree that some areas have had blanket 30mph speed limits put on them for no reason, Oxfordshire is a prime county for this and in most cases there are no properties there, but in built up areas, just stick to the limit.

I'm afraid I will need a tin hat but I think 38 in a 30 is far worse then 90 in a 70.

I agree with you Roy. 85 on a motorway, a controlled environment no oncoming traffic kids/old people/pets etc to run out etc is no where near as bad as 38 in a 30.

I also hate the blanket dropping of limits. They have made every road in my area other than the main one 20mph recently! 3rd gear central.

I did read that one reason for dropping limits especially from national speed limit sections to 40/50 is that the level of maintainance needed was also proportionately less. So basically save money. Can't back it up with any evidence but given the determination if the roads it makes seance if true

That was partly the direction of my earlier post with OP's comment about being just 8mph over in a 30 zone

Looking at the stats the latest I can see online specifically related to Mway Vs other roads, indicate only 100 deaths on motorways Vs 1719 on other roads.
As posted above controlled environment, lack of pedestrians, etc. is sure to be a factor.

I read the other day that the 10% discrepancy is no longer in force so even 1 mile an hour faster than permitted is a 3 points , £100 fine !
Germany her we come .

Is this the 10% discrepancy for speedo errors (which only allow it to over-read by 10%), or the ACPO guideline for prosecution of 10%+2mph?

The latest ACPO guidelines I've seen are below (but I think ACPO has been recently replaced by the NPCC):
