You were both in the wrong, the van driver for not looking left and yourself for overtaking near a junction.
You should maybe just be glad that you were in a car that was able to accelerate quickly past the truck, if you were in something slower it may have been a messy result which you would have been to blame.
The junction you said is a give way which means he didnt have to stop.
I learned to look both ways at junctions while running around Glasgows one way systems, its amazing how many people drive the wrong way down these streets and if you dont look eventually someone will hit you going the wrong way.
Take it on the chin and learn from it, it could have been worse.

I would want to reinforce the need not to overtake before a junction on either side of the road. It's not a question of who's right or wrong in my mind, it's simply survival.
Carol stated that she saw the junction ahead and it was empty, only when she committed to the overtake did the van driver pull out into her side of the road having only looked right. . . .something to be expected sadly.
