Had a coolant leak last summer which turned out to be a crack in the expansion tank. This time I noticed a damp patch on the middle of the undertray. When I removed it, I noticed coolant residue around the waterpump, but then noticed it above this, just below the thermostat housing.

Is it possible that it's just the gasket thats failed? It's only a small leak and there is no whirring noise thats associated with a failed waterpump.

here's a video i managed to do today, after running the car so it was warm. i'm a little worried it's coming from around the gasket (is this possible?), but it also looks like it's coming from the thermostat also.

cheers, seems a bit of a tight area to get to :(

after 2 hours, there was only a tiny drop on the garage floor, so it's not too bad, but obviously needs sorting before it's too late.

is it part number 5 on the diagram on realoem, below?:

G'day mate, No it's no. 5 under cooling system water hoses and is on the temperature sensor. The o-ring is not sold separately by BMW but the size is 5/16 x 3/16 by 1/8. ie 1/8 inch cross section. Be sure to get an o-ring which will handle high temperatures.

Found it, cheers.

I'm unsure it's actually coming from there. Will have to try and get a better look and will report back.

This was were my coolant leak was, cost me £259 for my new Indy to fix thermostat housing completely renewed

thought i'd update this incase anyone in future has the same issue.

bought a new thermostat housing from eurocarparts (a wahler one, hopefully it's decent) and replaced the old one. the gasket looked knackered so that was most likely the cause of the leak, but it was worth changing the whole lot for peace of mind.

will wait a few days to see if it's still leaking, but after driving 15 miles, theres no leak from the area in which it was coming from. fingers crossed it's fixed.
