Hi all-had a back tooth out a while ago but ever since i feel real conscious about it,would you leave it,brigde it,or get a screw in?-thanx

I had back tooth out a few year back and to be honest it has never bothered me and i just left it,it is on the upper set second from the back nobody has noticed not found it a problem.I'm not that vain but the GF begs to differ

Think it depends where it is...

I knocked three teeth out when I was fifteen :o all at the front. I now wear dentures! To have it bridged would require four teeth to be chopped up to get the strength. Implants are too scary for me...

My other half is a dentist, I have asked her to comment on your post...... the reply..... tell him to go and ask his dentist for advice...... I suppose that means Z4 forum members re more suited to Z4 related matters. Sorry mate

Back tooth of mine went last Autumn. Split in a strange way and and I opted for removal rather than extensive attempts to rebuild it. As soon as it was removed I felt horrified I decided to get a crown, Read a bit more and thought a bit. Realised the crown itself can make the tooth in front and behind fail over time.

Decision n the end to leave it and almost forgotten it now.

I'd recommend wait 6 months and see how you feel

Agree, depends where it is.

I knocked out my two front teeth when I was nine, but luckily I was able to have it bridged. They dentist intentionally kept them short so that I can't put too much pressure on them - downside is I can't bite down through things (e.g. pizza) but I can live with it.

I also had a tooth removed (filling in my youth, went wrong around 5 years ago and root treatment failed), third from back, bottm right. Felt really weird at first but now I'm used to it. What I'd say is that you need to decide for yourself...

Cheers chaps-z4alfie-ive been to see my dentist-sounds like my options are-a screw in @ £2000!,a bridge nearly the same price or a pallette(spelling?)@ £200 which he said i would find uncomfortable wearing and end up leaving it out-the tooth i had removed only started out as a chipped corner :x

I had my very back molar out. Its been out for a few months now...

I am glad it was the furthest back to be honest. I can eat fine etc...

If you go back to the dentist, please remember you may end up going back constantly to adjust the bridge or crown etc. I was considering an implant, but at the time i looked at the cost and

Even though its affordable now, i still cant justify it

As a current forum member and a dentist with 30 years of experience I feel qualified to provide some input. If it's the last upper molar forget about it. No harm will come from it's loss and I doubt that you'll miss the chewing power. It it's the second to last, then the decision is a little less straight forward. The gap created may show some in your smile. In terms of replacing the tooth, a bridge is certainly an option, but it does compromise the two anchor teeth and creates a extra area to focus on when cleaning and brushing your tooth. The most technically elegant solution, the dental implant, is also by far the most expensive. The placement of one in the upper molar areas can also require sinus surgery to provide enough bone to anchor into. More money. So, do think carefully about it and consult with your dentist, not your forum mates.

Are you insured? I broke a molar a month ago and dentist fitted the crown etc. Health insurance covered the cost (£600) without batting an eyelid and no impact on my premium.
