Ok so yesterday i got a call from a young chap whi said he wanted to buy a car i have for sale, he said all he had to do was pop down the bank and get the money. I told him that was excellent and just let me know.

So a few hours later and i get a message saying he cant get the money. at this point im wondering if he was just saying this hoping i would lower my price, but i just txt him saying no problems and that should his situation change then feel free to get back in touch.

So about 7pm last night i get a txt on my phone saying he has managed to get £3300, down £200 from the asking price. now unfortunatly i missed this txt so i didnt get back to him. then at 7:45pm he calls me saying would i take £3400 and can he come pick it up on Saturday! i have now agreed to this but am i being silly feeling like something isnt quite right? or do you think he was just trying to get me down on the price??

also ive never sold a car private before so any tips???

Has he actually viewed it? It's not unheard of but is definitely unusual to buy a car without driving and seeing it first...

As for the price - if he can get £3400, he sure as hell can get £3500. It's all part of the game.

People do strange things when buying a car. Chap came and viewed mine (after seeing the auction on ebay) 5 days before it ended. Told him there and then he can have it for £2000.

Said he had to go away and think about it.

A day before the auction ended it hit £2000 and he calls and says he wants it. I said sorry its already hit £2k but he really wanted it so he negotiated £2300 with me and drove down at midnight to post a cheque through my letter box just to secure the vehicle.

If he comes over with the cash and its all ok do the deal £100 is nothing in the context of selling a car.

+1 Has he viewed the car was my thought?

This is all bizarre.... however if he tuns up take the money... as noted a 100 is nothing.

Strangle a guy on here was selling a hardtop and with out seeing it (i know its not the same as a car) i PM'ed and offered him 650 as i would have to collect it and also i would have to get it sprayed, he was looking for 900.... and said no, then someone on the site offered him 750 and he said he would think about it... :poke:

it sold on ebay a couple of weeks ago for 535... why he never got back to me to ask if i was still interested i will never know (i am not as i got one)

so basically you can never tell with buyers or sellers..... just my 2p worth

I didn't even know you were selling your car :P sounds rather strange the way he is acting, are you in a hurry to sell?

I'd make it clear to him that that is the lowest price, so if he thinks he is going to turn up then try knocking more off because of a stone chip or whatever he can forget it!

I have to disagree a little he may well be basically trying his luck, it not uncommon especially with people who travel to buy cars. I personally have often negotiated on a price before buying and as long as the seller has been upfront with any possible issues it’s not a problem for both parties especialy if you have a 500 miles round trip your coming with the cash... as I did with my current coupe. Basicly commiting to buy a car on images and text is ebay...

Of course if one arrives and the car is "not as described" there an option open negotiations or close negotiations, reality is he may only be able to scrape 3400, would I bother over 100 quid if it was a deal in a word no, bird in a hand and all that but if someone is set on a price then stick to it I say...I do not like the fact he did it after… if am honest other than that a car sold is a good thing in this market especially if it was close to the asking price.

I have sold some cars to right idiot’s in the past who try all sorts of trick to get the price down so be carefull if its your first go at selling a motor, and the viewings even worse! , One time I had a Gtv v6 for sale and this woman came to look at it … she then starting asking about the 147 I had and if that was for sale… AKA the time waster! (Not anyone on here of course!) … only thing is to keep smiling

Only IMO of course

I think M@r]{ has hit the nail on the head...after this no more

Good luck with the sale

if he does turn up, make sure the cash is er real and not fake...

bank transfers are much safer IMO

People do some weird things when buying/selling.

I had a guy recently tell me he'd received a full asking price offer in the morning (I was going to see the car in the afternoon) but that he said to the other guy he'd wait for me in the interest of fairness..

When I arrived the car's release bearing was jangling away so I said it'd need a clutch and I wasn't interested. He asked how much I was willing to offer for it, said he'd take money off for the clutch... all this after "having" an asking price offer in the morning? Yea... sure.

well he hasnt seen it yet but its as described and well looked after, only will to take cash really and im going to make sure i count it lol

+1. Gannet has the right idea.

Personally, as with other members that have mentioned, I would do direct bank transfer. The best way. Wouldn't accept a cheque or even banknotes, incase as Gannet said, they're fake.

came and paid for the car in cash counted it and all was ok, apart from one fake £20!!

Wow, sorry I was presumptuous that the buyer was very suspect. Did he have a spare £20 note?

He had Already left when I found it ;-) although my local shop didn't mind taking it lol
