Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport

I’ve just had a set of these fitted to my M so I thought I’d leave some thoughts here for others as us poor M owners are a little limited on choice when sticking to OE sizes.

The reason for changing is that my last set of tyres (Goodyear Asymmetric 2) whilst still having 3-4mm of tread, had become floaty and horrendously imprecise. Under full throttle the car would pull all over the road much like a car with shot fcab/rtab might do-I actually had the RTABs changed last year as I thought that was the cause. Thankfully new tyres have resolved this issue so that’s worth bearing in mind for anyone else with the same symptoms and old tyres.

The old AS2

So far I’ve done roughly 250 miles so I’d say they were pretty much run in. That said, I didn’t notice any distinct break in period or low grip/disconnected feelings like I have on previous tyres-my Goodyear Asymmetric 2’s were a little sketchy for many miles.

Initial thoughts are positive. Dry grip levels seem very good and I’m once again able to pull away fairly hard without having to manage wheel spin. I haven’t given them a proper thrashing (yet) but turn in is improved compared to the previous tyres and the car feels more consistent and precise through a corner than it ever has done.

They are supposed to be noisier and have higher rolling resistance than the AS2 but so far I can’t tell the difference. I’ll be doing a long drive through Europe soon so we’ll see how the MPG goes.

The only possible downside is that they are clearly stiffer than the AS2s, not unbearably so but it’s noticeable. However, as that stiffness increase translates to a better sense of connection it’s a trade off I’m willing to make.

Perhaps the only underwhelming aspect of the tyre is the look of the sidewall (yeah, yeah I know!) They aren’t bad by any stretch, but compared to the cup 2s my brother has just fitted they’re a bit plain!

I was torn between these and asymmetric 5 and went for the latter. The old tyres were ancient so anything would have felt good, but the tyres have transformed the feel of the car. Between these, and the 4/4s, you cant go wrong. I agree about the sidewall, the new michelins do look cool.

I don't think you'll go wrong with any of the premium brands and their sportier tyres-In fact, if the PS4S had been available at launch in the right size I'd have probably gone for them at an earlier time.

I'm sure the AS5 will serve you well, the only reason I went with the Supersport is that mine had so much tread left by the end of their life that I figured I could get away with something a bit softer and wear them fully. Time will tell if I live to regret that!

As I’ve done the best part of 2000 miles on these I thought I’d round things up a bit.

Since fitting the Supersports I’ve driven through Europe on everything from city streets to autobahns with a couple of laps of the Nürburgring thrown in for good measure. To put it simply, I’m very happy and very impressed with these tyres.

Their dry limits are exceptional and I have more trust in the car than ever before. They take a set without delay which really boosts turn in and mid corner confidence and even when really pushed through a series of tight hairpins they remain consistent and progressive. On the ring they were excellent, I’m a total novice there but was happy to push fairly hard as I always knew where the grip was.

However, what has actually impressed me more is their wet performance. There is so much traction that on a soaking road, full throttle in second can be used. In fact, even in first they left me staggered at how much throttle was needed to unstick the rears as well as how quickly they found grip again. I haven’t pushed them hard round wet corners but at medium speeds they seemed to have plenty of grip in reserve and maintained their direct and transparent character. Hopefully I’ll find somewhere open to test their wet limits one day.

As for the nvh side of things I have no issues with them and don’t find them in any way intrusive. As I said before, they are a little sharper and stiffer over ridges but it’s a non issue as far as I’m concerned. I also didn’t notice any difference in mpg on my return journey to Italy and whilst it wasn’t exactly a scientifically perfect test, if there is a difference it’s in the ‘noise’.

I should say that I’m (clearly) in no way a tyre tester or race driver but for someone who uses their car primarily for fun but still needs some real world ability (wet, touring) then I would definitely recommend the F1 Supersport.

*Sorry about the badges fellow wheel nerds, I had to have them rebalanced and I haven’t got round to sorting them yet!
