Goodbye Z4 - it's been emotional

Back when they launched the car in June 2003 my mum picked up a launch model and I was really fed up when I was unable to get insurance on it. Three years later I finally managed to get insured at lest than £1k a year and I picked up my 2003 2.5i Z4 Roadster for £16,000 :D

Spec'cd to the hilt I picked it up for £16k from a dealer and was pretty pleased - Xenons, Comfort pack, Cruise Control, Professional Sound System, Heated Seats, Auto Dimming Mirrors, 6 CD changer, Wind Deflector, 17" alloys and rear PDC, it was so nice - every mile was a smile :driving:

In the last 12 months things have very much changed though - gone are the days where I drive the car for fun, gone are the days where I didn't care for the cost of petrol or just how many miles I got from a tank. Now the cost of servicing, road tax, tyres and more are really starting to hit home. The £1,000 on servicing and tyres in December were hard to take, the 10% increase in my insurance renewal hit home this month, as did the road tax renewal which arrived on the same day

Alas at just under 7 years old the Z4 has finally started to cost me far too much to bear anymore - I've lost £8,000 in depreciation alone :fuelfire: . I paid a deposit for a new vehicle today and I am finally getting out of the petrol fast lane.

A 120d 3dr M Sport is bought and being prepped for next week's collection (it too has depreciated, its a March 2009 car, already £9,865 down on the original purchase price  ) - sure its a complete change, but its figures of circa 60+ avg mpg were the swing factor compared to the 19/20 the Z4 is now giving me.

I am going to miss the roofless motoring, I am going to miss the way it cleared most things off the line - it was a fantastic ride for 3+ years but the time has come to move on to something more reasonable, something with a fairer return, something with a bit if value beyond solely the smile on my face.

Who knows, I might revisit if the values drop enough for a secondary car, but for now, Goodbye Z4 - it's been emotional

I can see where your coming from speedski I had a 1.9 TDI octavia and I was never at the fuel station, but with the Zed im always there lol.

Will you be getting the 120d remapped? I heard they remap very well 200+ BHP, might bring back abit of the zed speed :)

I may, although to begin with I think I am just going to see how it suits - its only 0.5 second slower as per specs to 60 compared to the Z and given its a March 2009 it also means I have 2 and a bit years warranty again - none of the AUC issues either :)

Its a basic spec, but I have to admit i was spoilt with the Z, I have it for another 6 or so days so will have to take a day trip out for a drive and blow a tank :driving:

Well i would have BUT - on February 1st the road tax and the insurance was due - that was another £700, so I needed it shifted before the ended of the month and really wanted to avoid the hassle - it has two things wrong with it according to dealer spec - one fog light is smashed (driver side) but still works (you can only buy them in pairs and never got round to it) and two there are no run flats on it - just a full set of Avon's as I needed them replaced quickly and they were the only ones in stock at the time.

First dealer offered 7k, second offered 7,200 and i traded with the one who offered 8k (thats over 1k over current part ex rate) - its got 58k on the clock.

How much discount on the new one though? I trust they were independent transactions as otherwise you would have gotten even less for the Z.

3 years is a good run for a 2 seater really :)

Just be glad you did it, as you say the prices we have to pay for running cars like these are quite overbearing now.
A V8 or such would be an absolutey insane purchase in this day but having had the experience done while you can is a great thing. Take some nice pictures of it before it goes and keep the memories

You're complaining about the cost of it yet have paid a small fortune, presumably, to trade up to a near-new 120d. The tyres are still expensive, it's not amazingly cheap to insure, and you'll save maybe £100 a year on tax and a few quid a week on fuel.

When compared against the depreciation rate which will hike on a new car rather than an older one which is depreciating at a much slower % rate, well, you're mad!

well said spud but i guess this has been well thoughgt over! looin at u sig- lightweight batt? wats that 4?

Lose 12kg of weight for speeeeed :driving:

Sorry its gone! :(

Seems a bit strange you can't afford a bit of petrol but can splash out on a nearly new car??? :?

The MPG you stated is really low! Did it have any problems? My 3.0 will do 26mpg in stop start traffic on my 10 mile round trip to work!

Definatley get the 120d mapped however!!!

Good luck with the 1, it's a good car. I think you'd be lucky to get 60+ tho. Come back & let us know what you think in a month or so.

Hefty discount, priced its specification up against a new one if I was buying it now - its £10,250 off list - it was registered in March 2009 so manu warranty till March 2012. It was done as a package, turns out there was a bundle put together but I am ok with it...

Absolutely - great post, thanks.

Insurance has dropped by 30% (which is significant), Road Tax is almost halved from £215 to £120 - and from April 2010 the difference will grow even more to £245 to £90.

I was putting in £55 a week in petrol - and I did 100 miles of non commuting out of that tank. A same tank of diesel will last me for 300 non commuting miles a wekk, or in otherwords about twice as long as a current tank of fuel. I have done 30,000 miles in the Z in the 3 years I have owned it, at a very conservative 280 miles per tank (on avg) it means i have filled it over 107 times - that nearly £6k in petrol alone before i even talk depreciation.

Finally I like the security of a warranty - I have been lucky and had one on all the cars I've had - apart from my first car (which I got 22% of list) I have always bought nearly new ex demos where most of the depreciation hit has gone already.

I know I am mad, I know sometimes the justifications may not add up, but in my head they kinda do and I know that I have more security in motoring costs over the next three years than the Z could offer me (even though mine was press/launch dealer car and has had, touch wood (*slaps head*) no problems up to now...

Its not so much about the petrol costs, its about the fact that its a different car, more practical and less restrictive. If it gets to the point where you go in the other half golf TDI where possible because the Z is either not practical or too thirsty you know that times they need to change. The Z's my main car, its the only option I have for getting to work and its just become a bit too much to justify...if I could afford the insurance for two cars for myself I would keep it, but its pointless keeping it for a sunny day and paying big numbers to insure it for the rainy days...

Are you going by 26 on the display or by a calculation? I have a completely stop start morning and rush hour night drive home - it usually takes aroun 40 minutes and its not THAT far. 19 may be a bit bad of me to say it is better than that at times...

I will of course - i don't think I will get 60 either, but then again, I can't be worse in comparison with what I have now... and when its 177BHP vs 194BHP and 7.3 vs 6.8 to 60 its not THAT much different but should cost less.

Good car to change to :)

A friend of mine has a 118d M Sport and even that goes pretty well. It looks great too having the M Sport kit on it, and the interior is a lovely place to be. Stupidly expensive brand new though like he did buying his!

I would NEVER have bought new - the dealer tried it on with a car on its way over, it had a ok spec but to be honest, all I wanted was cruise control, anything else was a bonus - they tried to get me into a £28k car :fuelfire: . I wasn't polite after i tld them they we not listening to what I was actually saying and asking for.

The 123d is nice, but eveything goes up in price, the 118d is nice but a little slower - the 120d is a good midpoint - besides they are all the same engine anyway which is why the 120d will remap nicely.
