Goodbye Z4, hello...

I think as others have said above, the handling isn't quite as sharp as the Zed... it's a much softer ride especially compared with the 19" wheels that the Zed had. It also sounds a bit like a tractor when the engine is cold for the first few miles, :P but quite refined when cruising along at speed. The auto box is pretty clever and shuffles through the gears quite sweetly. This is the first auto I've owned.

The seats are fantastic and most importantly the mpg is in a different league to the Zed... as someone said above, if they made a Z4 diesel I would be first in the queue! :D

Quick photo from my commute to work this morning... the Zed would be luck to get around 35mpg and I'm expecting the SLK to improve as the engine loosens up.

It's a lovely looking car, and I am very tempted too. But like Maniac, I just think the Z4 looks epic, and has such beautiful lines, with the very very long front and beautiful curves, I just think the SLK is a little too less a sports car. But maybe it's just me. I am still dallying around thinking about new cars and now that my house is sold, not sure what to do. But it's a very very nice car and th new white is better than the old one.

Merc have done well with some many of their cars now to include the AMG kit, and on some models, like the E Class, leather and Command too. But that's also clever marketing I guess.

As for the weight of a folding hard top, diesel and auto box, each to there own. :P
 
I'm warming to these, but would be interested to know what the reliability and quality is like compared to the Zed, it's my one disappointment with BMW at the moment and whether I stay with them after the Zed :|

4 years and 3 months is the longest I've ever owned a car, so felt it was time for a change. Definitely agree that the SLK is a different kettle of fish, especially in diesel form, but I have grown to like the styling, and with the deal that Mercedes Benz Glasgow put on the table, I couldn't walk away. :wink:

I might well come back to the Z4 fold when/if they introduce a successor to the E89 !! :driving:

I've been told that the airscarf is very good even on cold mornings without the roof down. :D

Mine has nearly done 16,000 miles in the 9 months of ownership, I would say that my ownership experience has put the BMW's to shame. The paint work for one is far more durable than the zed.

The airscarf is very good indeed when it starts to cool on a summer/autumn evening or in the morning whenever your neck is exposed, however a little redundant when your wearing a coat with a high collar.
 
I'm really swithering on one of these and can get a staff discount as my cousin works for MB UK :thumbsup:

Just a pet peeve, but why can Mercedes put decent info screens in their cars when we're stuck with 80's throwback orange dot matrix ones. How many millions of displays did bmw actually pick up and more importantly, when will they run out and finally start using oled/TFTs?
 
I see they have the same stupid parking brake arrangement as the new A-class. Wrong side and counter-intuitive in operation. We've not yet sat in or driven any Merc and 'got it', but that's probably why we keep ending-up back in the BMW salesroom :rofl: Looks ok if you like HUGE 3-pointed stars :o and what's with AMG wheels on every other MB I see :thumbsdown: Far too common, now, and they've lost their niche as a result.
 
The SLK does not have a hand/parking brake, once stopped you press the brake pedal down a little further and the parking brake is applied, It auto releases when you press the accelerator

There is a parking brake switch down to the right of the steering wheel, but as you say, you only ever need to apply it (press it in) when you park and get out the car. When stopped at traffic lights you can use the "HOLD" feature, by just pressing the brake a bit further when stopped. The brake lights actually stay on when you activate HOLD. The parking brake auto release when you drive off.
 
Was in on Saturday at MB Glasgow. SLK 250 Amg sports, tenorite silver, Grey leather, parking sensors, panoramic roof, mirror pack(dimming,folding etc) parking sensors, heated seats with neckscarf too.
Back in on Saturday morning next week for a drive and final discussion on figures.
Depends what they offer on ours, but I could walk away from pcp anyway and get a deal from my cousin in England.
£1k deposit and £430 a month over 36 months.
Just waiting on figures from MB next week. :driving:
 
My sister-in-law brought one of these and came over to see me today (so i could have a look). as nice as the car is, when parked near my my E89 35i it looked dated and at odds with a few panel angles. I just dont think that MB got the front end right on this range of cars.

I thought the interior was bland and the nav screen way too small (for a myopic sole like me that is).

This is of course just my opinion.

Strangely to me they look too much like the MK1 which does give it a slightly dated look, it doesn't have the Zeds looks wow factor.
