🥲Sad day today for my good lady and myself. One of our Cavalier Spaniels had to be put to sleep. We had her from being 10 weeks old and she was close to her eleventh birthday.
My wife had always wanted a puppy. But it wasn’t a good idea whilst we were both working. So when she retired I found a ruby coloured Cavalier Spaniel puppy and surprised her with it. She was delighted and Chistened the new member of the family ( not very originally) Ruby. Right from the beginning Ruby proved to be very obedient. That is if what you were asking her to do matched with what she wanted to do. If not then she just did her own thing. Over the years she has afforded us a huge amount of pleasure offering unconditional love. She was happy to welcome another rescue Cavalier a few years ago down the line and the pair have been inseparable since Leo arrived. He is really going to miss her as are we.
If you are dog lovers you will understand the hole Ruby’s departure has made in our lives. If not you will just think I am a sentimental old fool.🥲

Aw thats a lovely note about a lovely dog, Ruby. She will be obviously missed

There are quite a few of us on here that understand. We had our German Shepherd from a puppy for a wonderful 12 .5 years, he passed away almost 5 years ago and we all still miss him.

So sorry for your loss, totally understand how you're feeling. I had 4 gsds who were my world, they moved with us when we decided to relocate to NZ. My ex and I split and I lost my dogs forever (I came back to uk). 25 years on I still think about them and now we have a cat and a horse maybe not the same... but yes the same emotional attachment.

I know how much your dogs mean to you and Angela, Ian. You have our deepest condolences. It's horrible losing a dog.
Ours is coming up to twelve, so tapping on for a retriever.

Thanks Andy. They are members of the family and fill the hole when children move out. We have had a few dogs over the years . They have all been very different in their characters but all very loveable. We are concerned how our remaining Cavalier is going to cope without his best mate. But I would be very reluctant to go back to having two dogs again. Now over 80, I don’t think it would be very sensible . Secondly the cost of vetinary care is horrendous. As you must know with your own dog. It costs more to insure two small dogs than it does to insure two cars, the house and some of our main household appliances. Crazy!

So sorry for your loss Ian, Olivia and I send our condolences.

Pets are such important parts of the household the loss is palpable.

Hope Leo isn’t too distressed.

Take care

Stuart

So far so good Stuart. As long as Angela is around he seems happy enough. The real test will come when we leave him on his own.
Being animal lovers yourselves you know what it is like to lose a much loved pet. Some of our friends think we are mad especially when you take into account the cost of keeping animals. I dread to think how much we have spent over the years. At one time, as well as the dogs we had a cat and three horses. But I don’t begrudge a penny spent. All of our animals over many years have given a huge amount of pleasure. I wouldn’t change any part of our ownership experience.👍

Sincere condolences Ian, those that know will know what it’s like to lose a pet, you gave her the best life.

To us they are one of many loved pets that are part of our life, to them we are their whole life.

Terribly sad to read that Ian. I thought Ruby seemed very chilled when I met her.

Wishing you, Angela and Leo all the best.

A sad time indeed as we know from when we had to have Flint put to sleep . I`m sure you have many great memories to look back on and more to come with Leo .
