Goodbye Porsche, Hello BMW...

Hello,
I'm a college student in the midst of researching for my next car, I've narrowed it down to either a Porsche Boxster S, e46 330Ci, e46 M3 or a Z4.

I say I come over from the dark side because I was pretty set on the Porsche but as aforementioned, I am a college student and to put it bluntly I can't take a gamble on the M96 engine in 986 & 966 Porsche's due to their rear main seal, intermediate-shaft and 'D-Chunk' problems which like to cause catostrophic engine failure, it probabaly happens in about 1% of them and as much as I like Porsche and would like for it not to be true, it's a possibility and a $12,000 replacement engine doesn't come easily for a college kid...

So I've set my sights on an BMW, I've always liked BMW, in fact it's what I was originally going to get before I got into the whole Porsche thing, but here I am again, like a crack addict that can't stay away from a good thing haha, I will begin my research here and hopefully don't uncover any nasty things like I did for the 986 model boxsters in Porsche, I've heard of exploding cooling tanks and things of the like, I realize M3's are expensive but I trust either that or a 330Ci will be more 'bullet-proof' than the Boxster, and won't have a nice little 12,000 dollar surprise on a random day.... the M3 I realize will also be expensive to maintain but I can handle a $2,000 or even $3,000repair a lot more easier than a $12,000 one

Update: I'm basically set on the Z4 because I can get one in warranty from BMW for pretty reasonable prices, and it still maintains the roadster quality I really want!

It would make it a heck of a lot easier for me, bringing up some of the more common or major failures if any, and it would be greatly appreciated!

I'm looking at a 2003 most likely, or even a 2005 since they're so cheap right now, although I most likely won't be buying until another year or so prices should be at the very least the same as they are now if only for depreciation and being one year older, or if the economy here in the US stays the same or worse I might be able to find an equal or better deal, thank you for the info though Phil....

Welcome to the forum. I've owned four BMWs so far and they've all been exceptional and reliable vehicles :D except for the odd O2 sensor to be replaced. :(

You'll read in this forum and other forums horror stories about the reliability of the BMW vehicles. It seems to be a hit or miss thing. Also, I suspect that a lot of people drive their cars like madmen with ultimately the resulting mechanical failures that are blamed on poor BMW quality. Good luck with your search.

pmeloche, thanks for your insight, I understand what you're saying though and realize that no matter what brand or forum there's never going to be a perfect car, I can expect faults to happen and it's more of a matter of what's more reliable/fun than anything else, honestly if it wasn't for the engine failures in the Porsche Boxster I'd still be opting for one, but I can't take the gamble as I've stated before, so here I am... I always did like the Z4 though.

I've owned both an E46 330 and a 986 Boxster. The 330 was absolutely bombproof and a superb car, but not that quick. The Boxster's 2nd gear went, costing me £3000 but when right was a great car also. DO NOT get a Boxster without a warranty would be my advice. I am now the proud owner of a Z4M but have had it only one day so can't help with that one :)

Hey mate,

I was in the same (sort of) situation as you, i originally wanted a 986 Boxster and have done for a while now. I started looking again a couple of months ago and was shocked that for £14,000 you could now buy a 987 New Shape boxster (allbeit the 2.7).

After a few weeks of reaserch i weighed up the options. I could either get an 'entry level' 986 2.7 Boxster or a Top Spec 3.0 Z4. My last car is/was a VX220 (0-60 in 5.5 Seconds) and i was advised that I would be less than impressed with the power of the 2.7 Boxster compared to it, and i just knew that on my budget; if i went for a boxster, there would be a lot of blank switches looking up at me from the cabin that would have done something cool if it were a higher spec model. On the boxster forum the base model is also referred to as 'Poverty Spec'

It ended up being a no brainer, I opted for the Z4 3.0 which is not too far off (performance wise) my current car and has tons of optional extras. Picking her up as soon as i can sell my current car!

Good luck in the search anyway :)

I was in the same situation, but taking the Boxster S for a drive.. made it very easy for me. I hated it! So Z4 it is!
