Goodbye Avon ZZ5 hello Uniroyal RS 3

Just had two new tyres fitted today. Avon have discontinued ZZ5 in the 255/35 18 so I ended up choosing Uniroyal Rainsport 3. https://www.uniroyal.co.uk/car/tyres/rainsport-3

The tyre guy I use went on and on about them - they look good and seem to get good reviews, time will tell. Interestingly several people have recently mentioned 'blocking' on the Avons. It appears the back of each block of rubber wears more on the back than the front so you end up with a sort of Zig Zag profile and a noise like a shot wheel bearing (so that's addressed that problem!)
 
I can also vouch for zz5s and blocking... wont be buying them again. Gonna try hankook s1 evo 3s next, very good reviews but a lot cheaper than other premium brands.
 
Had RS3 on the R50 and loved them. At the height of driving (lots of mileage) I found they wear quicker than other tyres, but would rather trade wear for increased grip/performance!

I've had half a dozen sets of Avon ZZ5s on various cars over the years (all BMW) including 2 sets of the current tread design on my Z4. The second set on the car now has done approx 12k miles and they along with all the others have been exemplary and never given me any cause for concern whatsoever. It's a pity they have ceased making the 255/35R18 size as stated above...I'll have to look elsewhere next time :(
 
Sounds like general thumbs up for the Uniroyals :) . I actually liked the ZZ5's and had two sets. It did just occur to me they are not directional so I might swap the fronts over as they have started blocking but still have a few miles left in them.
The tyre guy showed me if you run your hand over the blocks on the outer edges one way its smooth the other feels jagged.
