Good bye z4

After 4 years ,17,000 miles and 3 gearboxes I could not suffer the gearbox any longer. A ford fiesta has better gear changes then the z4. New SLK on its way, 250 CDI auto. What I a do have is 4 brand new and un fitted 18 inch run flat tyres, any takers?

Sorry to hear that. My dads first 5 series back in 1993/4 had 13 gearboxes before bmw bought the car back off him and 3 of them were fitted in the same day and all failed. Sometimes you just get a wrong un or two or 13

Lol, no did not eat them, it's 2010 e89, box was never right from the start, took it into bmw dealer and they confirmed faulty gearbox, box replaced under warranty, drove car home 5 mile with new box, on the phone to dealer complaining box has not be changed or new on is faulty as well , bmw confirmed faulty box lol , how is that possible, anyway box 3 and still horrible. Complained again but bmw says that the box is fine. What a lot of bullshit. I drive 30k a year with manuals , which qualifies me as a competent gear charger. so now I had enough, tires are new for the 4 of them £975, I suppose I will take the highest offer.

That's rubbish to hear of your troubles. A friend of my Dad's had a similar story with a new M5 a few years ago, gave it back also in the end.

Good luck with the Merc... The engine is really sweet, albeit a bit on the noisy side. I hope the 7g tronic behaves for you! Again lovely box, but much better in sport!!

Had a test run at the weekend, from inside the car the engine sounds good belief it or not, box is brilliant and go's like hell, much quicker then the 2.5 strait 6

 pleased you're getting somewhere, albeit away from the Bimmers. Whats the Merc interior like in comparison? I always hated the thin, plastcky feel but in very recent years they seem to have upped their game.

Yes from inside they sound pretty good and the revs do seem to stretch, it is just from outside the rattle is pretty loud. But once it is run in you will get really decent mpg even with a heavy foot. Really twitchy in the wet though with all the toooorrque! Like a silly amount of torque. I've spent a lot of time driving and being a passenger in one - little bro has had one for a couple of years! The interior is amazing. If you don't have Nav, buy the Becker map pilot (around £200) and plugs in to the command and runs OEM satnav with real time traffic updates and re-routes etc! https://www.beckermappilot.com/shop/login/

Torque is amazing, inside looks good ,same standard as e89. A bit more classic I think with the air vents and radio. I know it's twitchy at the rear end. I would have thought the engine noise would calm down ones run in, I have a golf gtd company car and it's not bad at all after 3,000 miles.

Yes, I must admit I prefer the merc interior other than the pointless numbers next to the stereo buttons. Definitely a "merc'ism" which they don't seem to be able to leave out. Hmm I don't know, his must be on around 12-13k and it is still a bit rattly on tick over and slow moving - enough positives to outweigh that though.

Interesting thought , on my behave at least . The z is in my opinion more of a sports car then the slk, but I was ones having a go with it on the a82 glen Coe road with a Honda civic type R and Honda S2000, at a high speed  I had to back of because the z4 was not handling to bumps very well and mocks you of the road. The slk CDI on the other hand is as quick to 60 as the z4 has more torque and just keeps on going to 155mph. It most certainly handles the bumps better and stay on the road when hitting a few if them. So does that mean the slk is better? :?

I looked at the SLK and thought that the centre console looked like something out of the 80's!!! All that silver trim was too much for me, he asked if I wanted to test drive it....I said no thanks as I don't like that (pointing at the console) so it's not worth it.

Newbie , we're you born in the 80s  I suppose you are right but that is just the bit I like, saying that the auto gear stick in the z looks very cool
