Basically they've lopped £6k off the price after selling 6 of them! What were they thinking - £38k for a Golf!!!

Too pricey but build will be top notch.

Will be a tough decision between a Golf GTI and M135i when I come to change the Zed

Tim.

Ah, got it OG.

How they ever managed to sell 6 at that price is beyond me. At £33k it's still too expensive.

Tim, how can that be a tough decision? The recent Pistonheads review of the Golf GTi summed it up. The M135i performance is on another planet by comparison. The only way the golf can make any sense is if you take it at base price with no options.

I haven't driven the latest Golf but I've had a few F20 loaners and the build quality was disappointing somehow compared to my old E87. Agree on the engine though and the M135i is a steal with that engine.

I'm with NeilP and OG here. Golf cabrio's look terrible. Especially newer models which have a whiff of the Megane/Astra/Peugeot/etc convertible about them.

Exception to the rule would be the Mk1 Clipper.

Whilst I completely agree that I think the original price for the R was high, it was similarly priced to the 28i e89 M Sport. Both cars have 4 pot turbo engines, performance is similar with the Golf being 0.5 seconds slower, as for build quality and materials the Golf is certainly no worse and may be slightly better than the zed, so it's just brand value that's objectionable or do we think the zed is overpriced too

I don't think you can compare it to the Z4 although admittedly it does make the Z4 look expensive with the boxster comparison in that article. Comparing to it's natural BMW competitor it would be the 1 series cab and in that comparison it was priced slightly higher than a manual 135i so 6 cylinders a turbo and rear wheel drive V 4 cylinders a turbo and wrong wheel drive.

Tim, in terms of build quality, my wifes e87 was god awful. The mk6 golf that i test drove did feel more solid than the f20 so mk7 should be more or less the same. However, I think I was maybe equating the sensation as weight as solid build. It felt cumbersome, sluggish and very unresponsive. The f20 in sport mode on the other hand was razor sharp. Enough to make my Z4, when driven back to back, feel like the Golf.
