Golf advice - the game not the car !

Been retired now for 6 years - do a bit of clay shooting and volunteer work - fancy giving golf a try as a means of getting out a bit more and keeping fit - did have a go some 30 years ago but never had lessons or kept it up :( At 66 have I left it too late to begin again ? Not expecting to be expert but hopefully good enough not to embarrass myself and more importantly to enjoy the game. Real problem is I'm 6'7" - does this mean I have to have tailor made clubs or can I just buy some second hand clubs ( there are plenty about for as little as £75 ) and just adjust my stance to compensate ?

Best advice is find a local golf pro and have a few lessons with a 7 iron and see where you go from there .

you might be able to get the grips lengthened - but again a good local golf pro should be able to advise .

Whatever you do don't take it too seriously - will drive you insane if you do !!

ZermattV's advice is sound :)

If you have the time and a little spare dosh, then I'm sure you'll pick it up. I still have the same blades I bought, second hand, as a colt 35 years ago. I've just changed the grips a few times. I only play a few rounds a year though. To many beaches around here to be spending time on a green. Great game though, that I may well take up again when I retire. :)

I'm another one who needs to get out on the course more than the once a year I currently manage.

I bought a set of Second hand Ping "White Dot" irons - Ping do a range for lengths and lies ( how upright you hold the clubs)

Its about the length from the floor to your wrists against how tall you are.

Then get on Ebay!

Just had a lesson from a Professional - went really well if I do say so myself - my swing deemed okay but grip and feet position needed correcting - when I adjusted as per instruction I consistently whacked the ball relatively straight and around 150 to 200 yards :o :o He said these are really the only two things to concentrate on which means basically just keep practising - I ordered a set of clubs he suggested as suitable for my height - an inch longer than normal ( who says size doesn't matter  ) I've been talked in to doing a day out ( 2 rounds ) with the " boys" I used to work with on !st Dec - hopefully don't make a complete dick of myself but might as well throw myself in the deep end !

straight in with a 36-hole day... :o

...don't be surprised if you start reasonably well but find that things are going a bit awry after the first 9 or so holes, you'll have no muscle memory yet for the swing action and your muscles & joints will start to complain about being used in an unusual way which will throw everything off kilter

...and expect to be a bit stiff and sore the day after...

36 holes in December - you'll be needing to run round :D.

Good luck - If every 4th shot is a good un you'll be doing well.

Try not to hit the ball too hard - Golf if about hitting the ball straightish (for beginners).

Have fun :)

Ah - just realised it's a 9 hole course ( pheww!! ) I note new members are welcome at £534 pa ! - perhaps I'll just stick to green fees for the mo'

Freaking hell! Taking this up at 66! Boy am I glad I started earlier than you! I've been playing for 26 years and I don't think that I'd want to start again at any age over 35 because the "learning" takes properly years - many years at that! I keep thinking that if I started at 60, I'd constantly be thinking "wonder how far/well I could have hit it if I was proficient when I was 30"....
Welcome to golf, it's a great game. Infuriating at times but when you hit a peach of a shot, you'll know it. And you can get clubs, shoes and cart in the back of a Z...

I'm 38 btw.

GLWTG! A great game - the only "sport" I could become addicted to. Have played on and off, mostly the latter recently, for 30 odd years. When I retire will get back into it.

All the advice above is sound - you're playing against the course and remember that more shots are played with short irons and the putter than drivers, woods and long irons.

Why don't I follow my own advice?
