Goke Carbon Airbox (CA Automotive)

Can anybody who has this airbox fitted...

http://www.ca-int.co.uk/products-Y2FyX21ha2U9Ym13JmNhcl90eXBlPXo0bSZjYXRfaWQ9NDQ=.html

...let me know what software you are running and what problems (if any) you had with the mapping and running afterwards.

I'm pretty much set on a carbon airbox for the (almost) full CSL sound  but the mapping seems to be a bit of a minefield  and I would rather get people's perspective now rather than later.

Thanks in advance.

How disappointing that they took the time to post a video of how it looks, without any sound of the airbox in action... plenty of pictures of it already there if you're just interested in how it looks!

Exactly, I clicked the video hoping for a nice sound test.

I run one of these. Well made, certainly the finish is miles better than the gsr box I had in the m3 before. Alpha-n mapping was done for £350 by regal automotive after recommendation. I doubt they'd repeat the price as it was a you suggest a 'mare for them. I did tell them the ecu was very different to the e46m3 and to be fair they did a great job, even if it did take 4 days and honoured their original quote. I did give them £50 for dyno run electricity. I have print outs from about 20 runs. The map I have now from them behaves far better than the evolve map I had on the m3 for gsr box, it's totally flawless, throttle response is far improved, and post 2k revs the power curve is almost linear to the red line, in fact mine increases post 6.5 but I have some fancy cams.
Give them a call. Alternative is roy's custom map guy, which is expensive at around £1k, but i hear good things about him. Evolve map on Z4M carbon Airbox is not fantastic as far as I am aware. No personal experience though.

Thanks Tom that's exactly want I wanted to hear - first hand experience from somebody who has one  .

I was almost sold on the evolve box and map but have not heard entirely good things of either (although superficially the evolve box does look amazing) plus the Goke box uses the oem CSL filter (BMC) which would always be my filter of choice too.

The specialist I spoke to today said he would speak to his recommended software vendor (ESS) and get back to me whether they could do it on the Z4 ecu. Roy at CA says 2-3 weeks lead time on the airbox so fingers crossed this could all tie in nicely with the inspection 2 I am booked in for early April. If that doesn't work I now have another option in Regal.

I spoke to Roy regarding his airbox a few weeks ago and asked about the mapping he uses and he said he uses Evolve hence looking for other options.

Sorry, slight tangent - TomK - your engine spec is something i'd considered - what power do you end up with at the wheels?

For what it's worth it made 369 iirc, perhaps more importantly it made 15 more than my friends M3 also with carbon airbox and alpha-n on the same dyno a few weeks apart.

I'll dig out the graphs over the weekend and send them to you if you like, should have the wheel figure on there.

InductionRoar-I'd be interested to know what you'd heard about the evolve box. I did a fair bit of research in to the various boxes last year and didn't find anything negative regarding the box itself. PM me if you'd prefer :)

369 at the wheels is like 420 at the crank - is that right?

You cannot heel and toe... when you hit the brake, it kills the throttle input. Evolve don't seem very interested, shame really as it looks a quality bit of kit.

Yeah but it's evolve's map that's the problem not the box itself(which looks lovely). All the various boxes out there essentially copy the original design. The GSR box uses a slightly more restrictive filter placement and size, the evolve and Goke use the OEM filter.
Buy the box if you like it and get it mapped elsewhere.

Yeah of course, although nice to have a one stop shop. But did the post above not state CA Auto used Evolve?

Yeah I was quite surprised by that. When I spoke with Roy last year there was no mention of using evolve, he suggested using a guy who would do a live map on bruntingthorpe runway, the proper way to do it really. Sadly that costs around £1200, so I thought I'd give Regal a try. I purposely avoided evolve as I also had issues with their alpha-n map on my M3 previously (I wasn't the only one).

Pretty sure ESS can do these maps also.

The map issue has been touched on by other members (heel and toe and rev hunting until the secondary air pump kicks in) but I have been advised that the six outlets on the box are a different size to the throttle bodies and require silicon reducers to be fitted perfectly.

This is what I have been advised and I must make it clear I have not had any first-hand experience of the box but the finish looks first class. Also regarding the filter the evolve box uses a foam filter (ITG I believe).

Mine required reducers also, something like 65-57mm, I can check if you wish.

I'm confused about the filter, mine is CSL size (and a direct replacement) and is oiled foam made by ITG. I think the OEM CSL one is a similar construction, maybe not, though quite a few CSL owners replace theirs with ITG I believe.

That would be really helpful if you could measure the reducers.

The OEM CSL air filter was a pleated cotton filter made by BMC whereas the evolve filter is a foam ITG one. The air filter CA supply with their Goke box (according to the picture and speaking to Roy is the same BMC filter as OEM).

I don't think the filter is a massive point but I would prefer BMC personally.

Thanks for clearing that up IR  I was a little concerned that I'd missed something critical in the researching but as long as there isn't a huge step in the inlet tract I don't think the reducers will cause an issue. At least not for my application. I'll have a good look at the setup once mine arrives and post some pics.

As for the filter, I find it strange that evolve wouldn't have opted to use the CSL filter as a 'template' for their box but like you, I can't see it being a huge issue.
