What should I use to strip the paint off them??
Sandpaper?

What paint should I use on them? Any opinions on finish for my colour car

When I did mine I just sanded them back with a Scotchbrite pad, I got the paint from an automotive factors that I supply, The Spray Centre in Sheffield, there are others :D

I used a metallic silver Basecoat and over coated with clear, really enjoyed the process

I think some self refurbers have used Nitromors for the paint stripping part of the process.
This link will give you some idea

Reckon I might see what fully polished 108s look like.

pimp city, pimp pimp city bitchh

Hmm..
Best of luck, after mirror polishing by hand, the outer barrel and centre pieces, after stripping and re-building them etc..
And, then: If you like regularly polishing wheels / metal objects, with the likes of an Autosol compound, then: enjoy..
Don't get me wrong, they WILL look awesome, but the maintenance required, thereafter, can be a lottttttt!

Pic's, when done, would be great.. :poke:

Hey I'm a student...I just did my last uni exam for the year today.
I got till late September baby!

my routine from now on is sleep>eat>work from home>eat>gym>eat>play pc games> eat > eat >bed

Busy schedule but im sure I could fit some car time in there somehow

Also I got a DA polisher so maybe that could work on the star and rim?

If not I could buy a drill attachment?

I bought a set of 108's in shabby state & set about them with great intention's  after spending £70 on products & at least 15 hours in time i popped them on ebay & got my money back  wouldn't advise it & wouldn't consider it ever again .
now found a place in Bradford that will blast & powdercoat a set of 4 x 18 inch wheels for under £130 ! silver/grey or black :)
It really isn't worth your effort

No mate ,you have to sort that yourself 8)
most guys running their own set up are very reasonable , i pay £10 to have 4 taken off then £20 to have them re-fitted,valved & balanced ,

I got runflats on mine...would they do it for same money??

I tried nitromors to strip the lacquers on the 108's i got to refurb... It wouldnt touch it!

I think the later 108's were plastic coated not lacquered.

I used a drill attached prepping wheel... Stripped the wheels in no time... But was dusty as hell!

Right where do i start!!

Having just done a DIY wheel refurbish i agree with Mr Wilks its bloody time consuming!! And i vowed never to do it again at the time. But the finish i got and the enjoyment from the end product i love. If you have the time i say do it.

So hear are some finished pictures

Sanded down before i polished them

Masked up for painting

Scary moment when you cant turn back!!

As they where

Nitomorse wont get close to touching the paint. The 5th picture shows that. It took the cheap spray paint off from a rubbish wheel refurbish! But didn't touch what was underneath. I used some stuff i had knocking round from when we renovated our house called Blackfriar http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CEQQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.blackfriar.co.uk%2Fpaint-and-varnish-remover&ei=5ZukUYrjGeXz0gWl84G4Ag&usg=AFQjCNFEp0Y3__DHGiFZ0buSJP7WGcmK_w&sig2=WrDtFU0KXIobyuVzaTAT8A&bvm=bv.47008514,d.d2k&cad=rja Paint it on and leave for a bit the paint then peels off with an aluminum scraper. Use gloves as it eats through skin i have a scar to prove it!! I did have gloves on but it eats through them too.

I then used a hand drill plug into the wall type as a battery drill wont cut the mustard get one with a high rpm. I then used an attachment i had at work a big piece of foam with a drill attachment and a sanding disc wraps round. I would be happy to lend it to you as i couldn't find where to buy one!!

At that point if you want to polish them good luck using a drill type kit brought one and it was rubbish!! So i used a pedestal polishing mop we have one at work. Spins ineradicably fast and after about 3 hours on there the looked like the first pictures. I tryed for hours and hours with the drill type attachment

If you can get to Oxford on a weekend i will gladly polish the at work with you. Just want some beer tokens for the time

Good luck i would split them as well it would be much easier. Dont forget to mark up all rims and centers so they go bak together as they came apart!

Haha I have the longest running 108 refurb in history ongoing!

To date I have done two wheels, split the rims, stripped completely using nitro morse , removed the alloy corrosion using various grades of emery pads, polished the rims using a metal polishing kit from eBay ( works really well but cleaning the polishing pads is a pain)

Great results but takes lots of time and effort

Hoping to complete them soon ........ Like within the next year lol

Ive got a dremel 3000 which I bought yesterday.
could I get an attachment which would get through the paint easily enough??

which attachment would I need?

I have no idea mate never used one i would say something like a rough sand paper then smooth. Dont get a grinding wheel type the paint will fill the voids in the wheel making it useless in seconds.
